Littering or not?

I have six red landscaping rocks I want to get rid of. They are the kind sold at home improvement stores. Each is roughly the size of a watermelon. They are a deep red color and they are very light for their size.
I put an offer for them on Freecycle.
If no one takes them I'm thinking of taking them down to the river and putting them with the other rip-rap rocks lining the shore. I live near the Mississippi. The banks are lined with large rocks that have been placed there by man, not nature.
Would it be littering if I put my rocks there with the others?
The others are limestone rocks.

My guess is, if you asked your River Bank Authority (may be the city???), they'd say it was littering.

You should be able to find somebody to take the rocks, even if it takes a little effort.

You will have archeologists 100 years from now scratching their heads over those rocks.

Yea, I'd guess that legally it was littering... but doesn't seem like it'd do any damage, or even be noticed maybe... When my parents bought their place up in michigan the previous renovators had left a bunch of stones that used to line a walkway out behind their pole barn, along with a bag of cement that, of course, had simply spilled out and hardened... The friendly neighbor loaded them into his truck and took them to a lake on his orchard to make some new fish habitats. That's a little different since it was a private lake... but same principle IMO.

I might try putting them out in your yard with a sign. Chances are someone will pick them up.

If you lived near me, I'd take them off your hands. I'm looking for landscaping rock on the cheap, and I'm sure someone in your neighborhood is too. I don't use freecycle anymore because I got tired of all the spammers and beggers. Maybe try craigslist too.

+1 they'd probably want to deter others from dumping also. Questionable demo companies are always looking to unload construction debris (i.e., broken concrete, asphalt, etc)

You could always put them by the curb with a free sign on them.

I did that with a bunch of stuff before I moved. I was amazed that someone would want 20 year-old bowling balls. You never know.

More likely a geologist. But maybe an archaeologist, they look at historic structures too.

The rocks sound like some type of volcanic scoria.
If you released them into the wild with the other rip rap along the river bank it's unlikely that anyone else will take much note of them.
Or toss them into the river. They'd make their way to the gulf eventually.
