Google Street View

So I was checking some things out on Google Street View this morning and noticed that the Picture Date was January 2013. I navigated to my home to see if I could see anything interesting. This is what I found:

That's my cat sitting in the window watching the Street View car drive by.

That big ball on the top of the street view card probably looked like a toy to him.

When SV first came out, a co-worker's turn to navigate to his house yielded his son and son's as yet un-announced girlfriend leaving the house. Son and girlfriend were "outed" so to speak.

Just on a whim I mapped the house I where I lived in high school, only it's gone replaced by a McMansion. In fact it seems of the houses I lived in as a kid only one is still standing. That's kind of sad.

How do you find the picture date?

Street view is interesting to play around with, I used it when it first came out to check out the town I grew up in back in Rhode Island. I haven't been there in nearly 20 years and much has changed since then.

Start at 880 Jamestown Dr. Rockledge, Florida 32955. Head back west toward the stop sign (about 4 clicks) and you'll see me crossing the intersection on my bike. Keep going and turn left and you can see me again off and on. I do remember seeing the car, and following it for a short time.

Nothing interesting on my street view, at least in the immediate area... But some time back when I was looking for fishing spots on maps, I found a controlled burn in the forest preserve somewhat behind my place.

It's at the lower left corner of the pic. I reduced the size of the screen grab, so it's hard to make out.

This thread reminded me that I did see one of the Google vehicles while I was driving back to work a couple of years ago. Alas when I checked the intersection on street view my Element is mostly obscured by a street sign. Due to the direction they and I were going I never get back into the pictures again.

I saw a Google vehicle near home when I was out on the bike a couple of years back. I chased it to see how long I could keep it in sight, wondering if I'd appear in dozens of street view images, but never did.

Cool... I had never noticed it before. It only works in Street View, not in the overhead view.

You can also try to look at gas station signs in the background. If the price of regular unleaded is $1.58/gallon then it is probably fairly old.
