    Quit smoking out of the blue

    Hey guys!

    Decided to quit smoking yesterday at 7:00pm out of nowhere. Told myself I wont do nicottine patches or gum or anything the likes. I wanna get clean, TOTALLY clean. However, it's been a few hours and I am already freaking out.

    HELP!!! I have a feeling that I will replace smoking with eating and that would be even worse...

    Please give me advice... or tell me a story to keep my mind off of it. This aint cool, I am discovering feelings I thought i never had....

    I set a quit date for myself. Told my wife, when we bought a house, I would stop dipping. It was a big goal. In 1999, we bought that house. I have not had a dip of snuff since that date.
    Set some goals for yourself. I day free, 1 week free, 1 month free. Reward yourself at those milestones. Maybe figure the savings for not smoking, or set up an account and deposit the price of a pack of cigarettes in it daily, or however long it took you to smoke a whole pack and used that fund to furnish your reward?
    Set up something to take your mind off of smoking. I have heard of putting a rubber band around your wrist and when you have the urge to smoke, you pull back the rubber band and pop yourself. Negative association.

    Talk to someone who has watched a loved one waste away from lung cancer. Ask them to describe the dehumanizing, debilitating effects of cancer. I can tell you stories that I will never forget of the things I saw and did with my father in law as he died of lung cancer. Maybe that would be a good deterrent.

    You know what motivates you. Figure out a way to use that motivation to achieve your goal of living smoke free.

    Congrats on stopping your habit and thank you for the advice. I like the idea of putting the money in a pot. Assuming that cigs stay at they price they are I would be saving 82 bucks a month. That sounds pretty good. That is enought to pay for some supported rides plus wearable components and stuff when they need replacement.

    I just cant believe how hard it is to quit. I am quitting to improve my health and feel better while exercising but it is ridiculous how smokers are treated as second tier people. Now here is Atlanta is almost impossible to smoke anywhere and the places you can are usually in alleyways behind restaurants, parking lot corner a mile away from the office building you work at.... not cool. Yet the govmt makes billions of dollars with their extremely high tobacco tax. They should illegalize it altogether. Not fair benefiting from the billions of dollars of taxes paid by smokers just to have them smoke behind a trash container and treat them like lesser human beings. I do agree with having them in separate areas, just not the crappiest areas you can find. Here in my office complex we have about 10 acres of land. Of those 10 acres about 1,000 sq/ft divided in 3 areas are for smokers. And instead of putting us in a decent place where we can enjoy our cigarrettes they put us in an hallway to the gym behind the bushes (makes absolutely no sense), on the loading dock behind all the trash countainers and in a hidden corner on the multilevel parking lot.'

    RANT OUT!! I AINT SMOKING THAT WHACKY STUFF ANYMORE!

    I kind of randomly quit too, 2 days ago. It's cliche, but I've just been trying to stay busy. The temptation to buy a pack today has been so strong... Especially since I haven't slept more than 4 hours/night in the past couple days. Keep thinking about all the benefits. Even if you do replace the urge with eating for awhile... It'll be easier to get back into shape once you're a couple months clean.

    We probably feel about the same right now lol!! I am even afraid to leave my office to go have lunch because I am capable of just stopping and buying a pack...

    Trying to stay busy definitely what I am working on. I do catch myself randomly saying in my head "ahhhh cant wait to finish lunch to smoke that cigarette" then it's like "oh wait, im not supposed to"... what will I do after eating or making whoopie? I need to find a replacement... gum?

    Celery sticks. Lots of celery sticks! placates the need to eat with something that won't cause you to gain weight.

    Keep count of the days. Every day that you do not smoke 10, 30, 60, etc...adds to the total. If you slip up and have a smoke, tell yourself that you just wasted all that time and effort to give in and fail. After a few months, you won't even think about smoking and having to start that count over again from the beginning.

    Keep it up, it will change your life and quitting now and exercising is like money in bank for your health when you get older.

    Not unless you gain over 100 lbs. The injury that smoking does to your body is much worse than adding a bunch of pounds.

    With every craving, you have a decision, two choices really. Smoke, or don't smoke.
    Choose the "don't smoke" option every time. Cravings lesson over time. Good luck.
    FWIW, I quit smoking tobacco cigarettes the last day of 1999. Still crave them on rare occasions.

    You can do it!!!! I am a huge advocate for quitting smoking. It's a disgusting habit. Both of my parents and basically my whole family are chain smokers. I tried smoking at 18 for one whole day and couldn't hack it.

    Post to Foo, read, keep busy just like Benz said. If either of you need a quitting smoking buddy, you can PM me and I'll yell at you to not do it....

    Seriously, you will feel, smell, taste so much better once you stop.

    I used to smoke Camel menthols... when I decided it was time to quit, I went to the store and asked for the CHEAPEST non-menthol cigarettes. They were disgusting. When I got the craving for nicotene and lit one up, my brain quickly learned to associate nicotine with a unpleasant experience. I don't think I even finished half of the pack.

    Thanks for the support and awesome advice! Ive been reading what are the pains that your body goes through and apparently the worse starts at hour 48. Im at hour 18 and it already pretty bad. After hour 48 it takes 2 weeks to come back down. It even causes depression!! WHAT!? that's terrible.

    The celery sticks is actually a good idea, I hate celery so i wont be able to eat many of them either way. I do believe that is a healthy option to smoking.

    Another one of my biggest concerns is that at work i enjoyed smoking because i could go outside and be social for a little with random people, walk around and relax. Now I just sit in my cube and die a little inside sitting for hours on end. Might have to buy a pack of celery sticks and sit down at the park just to get out and relax.

    Tell everybody around you that you are quitting.

    This I found gives one a huge feeling of social pressure not to backslide.

    I found that it was about three days of having to constantly fight the urge. After that the craving diminished fairly quickly.

    The weight gain isn't as unhealthy as the smoking so don't worry about it for a couple of months. Kick the smoking then check your diet.

    it absolutely gets easier with each passing day. Believe it. The longer you go without a smoke, the harder it will be for you to believe it was ever a problem to quit.

    The one piece of advice I'd give is to prep for whatever situation(s) are hardest for you to resist (for me it was when having a few drinks or while reading or driving - I almost never smoked before noon and never after meals like many folks do). In those cases, I'd accept that it's going to be a bit harder - but you can do it. If you can have a friend nearby or on call (or use the web, as you've done here), that will help.


    I quit on New Years Eve 1999-2000. It was toughest for me the first few days, then only when out for a few beers for a few months after. I still get an occasional 'meh' urge but it goes away in about 2 seconds. I can't imagine spending the insane money cigarettes cost now, let alone polluting my lungs again. Or my spouse's lungs with second hand smoke, for that matter.

    You CAN do it. One day at a time. Reward yourself in small healthy ways for milestones (one day, one week, one month etc.).

    I quit so long ago cigs cost 50 cents a pack.

    The biggest issue I had beyond the desire for a smoke with a beer was wanting to fiddle with something. I carried a few paper clips to keep my hands busy during idle moments.

    you can use patches or gum to help alleviate the cravings somewhat.....and gradually weane yourself off those.
    A huge part of smoking is the mental "addiction".

    I feel like for me it's almost completely mental. The headaches and irritability and whatnot are a breeze for me since I suffer from chronic headaches and have withdrawn from heavy opiate and alcohol use in the past. And those things are tangible, in a way... The mental part is not.

    Find something else to keep yourself occupied. Get a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle, a model airplane kit, a book of Mensa puzzles - anything to keep your mind distracted.

    Still off! Yesterday was absolutely terrible... Specially the 45 minute boring commute home after work. Got home got on the bike and went for a pretty angry ride in the rain. As soon as I got home went to sleep and didnt give the cigs a second thought!...

    Hang in there! Believe it or not I already see the benefits when riding the bike. My HR dropped considerably even though I was actually pedalling harder. It's only one day and benefits are popping up. I think it will be worth it in the end. Keep yourself busy and just think about how disgusting they actually are. Today has been 2x better than yesterday. Hope you still clean

    I rode my motorcycle today as to avoid pulling over for cigs on my way home (Which I almost did yesterdaY!)

    Non smoiker here- why quit cold turkey? Get one of those electronic cigarettes and wean yourself slowly (and reduce the amount of second hand smoke effects).

    My boss on my old job tried to quit- patches and gum- without success. She switched to an electronic one and her productivity went up (she didn't need to step outside every 20 minutes). She went from a pack and half a day (and that was just on the clock- no telling how much on her own time) to about a half dozen quick puffs. Then it was down to about 2 a week (again on the clock). If nothing else, you'll get the nicotene w/o the benzine and the other harmful chemicals.
