1st college days

God willing, and terrestrial powers that be, my son will be starting college next fall. so I find myself very interested in info about 1st college days. i.e. orientation, moving in, saying goodbye to what you're used to, including perhaps a love. my son's new girlfriend took off for college and it has been hard on him.

anyway any 1st year college students or parents feel like reflecting on what they are up these days?

It is hard on everyone. You have given them the basics and if they came through high school ok, they will continue on that path of growth.

Be there for them! ... and keep your checkbook handy.

Is he going away? I definitely wish I would have kept a leash on my spending freshman year of college. Maybe help him with a budget. Besides that, at a major campus, making friends will be easy, and he'll mostly forget he's missing his friends and family in due time. You'll probably want to give him a quick lecture on over-indulging with alcohol as well. I saw a TON of kids that had never had that freedom before, and they often went off the deep end, including myself.

I had a rough time my first year because I was making friends, learning a lot and having fun and my family felt a bit neglected. I called weekly, but had to start calling more often. So, maybe ease up when it comes to phone calls. Plus, for a lot of kids the calls make being homesick worse...this is when they should be learning to break out on their own. Oh...keep an eye on the food budget. Freshman think they can eat well on freshman budgets...not so...spaghetti will become a staple.
