There's a course right near my house, maybe 1/4 mile to the start. I tried it for a while several years ago. I ran into multiple issues. At first, I improved rapidly, but that tapered off, so it didn't seem like I was improving any more. Then I was doing it partly for exercise, but by the time it was done, I was taking an hour to walk a mile, so I could just go walk for an hour and get three times as much exercise. And I didn't know anyone else that played, so I was going through the course by myself. So I went on to other things, and eventually wound up bicycling.
