Texting is one thing, holding a cell phone to the ear is another; there are a few jokers on A&S who yowl that any use of a cell phone by anybody, whether on foot, bicycle or motor vehicle is as dangerous as playing with rusty razor blades and gargling ground glass. At best, the worrywarts provide anecdotes about how cell phone use makes the drivers in their vicinity into distracted zombies, but are unable to reference any evidence or correlation to the increase in accidents one would expect from such a plague.

Yes we all see lots and lots of cell phone using drivers but few if any are able to reference many or any accidents as a result.

I hate leaf blowers. People just blow their crap from the side of the street to yours. Ultimate rude. I hate them about as much as automatic lawn sprinklers running while it's raining.

It's Brookline, MA. It is a strange place. Things many of us take for granted, such as common sense and logic, do not apply here. It's like some sort of
phantom zone. Ditto for neighboring Newton, one of the richest communities in the state. Very weird things happen in both places.

Having said that, I must also say that I don't like leaf blowers. When I was a kid, we would spend a fall saturday afternoon with these arcane things
known as "rakes" to collect the leaves. Apparently, rakes are now wrong, and you must use a leaf blower.

Or, maybe it's just the fascination some guys have with two-stroke motors. Leaf blowers, chain saws, outboard motors, lawn mowers..

What if I was to drive through Brookline texting with one hand, pointing a running leaf blower out the window with the other, and driving with my free foot?

Problem is, they blow the leaves to the neighbors, or out into the street, to get caught up in the public stormdrains. I have a huge problem with the blowers.

Some of my neighbors got upset when the city wanted to cut down the infected ash tree in the parkway in front of their house, and paid for a treatment that was supposed to protect the tree because they liked it so much. The same neighbors use the earmuff style hearing protectors when they're out there for waaaay too long with their electric leaf blower blowing the leaves out into the street. Apparently their love of the tree does not extend to the leaves.

That doesn't even make sense. If you don't pick up the leaves it will ruin the lawn. I hate my damn lawn but I don't want it to be a mass of rotting vegetation either.

We never picked up our leaves. Just mowed them back into the yard. No problems.

Maybe we don't have as many leaves in AZ? But we did have a yard with trees we had to water.

Mulching also works. But either way, you need either a bunch of time and energy for raking, or a loud gas powered machine. GAS POWERED - 'MURKA!
