Please don't toss that on the ground!

It hurts more than you ever thought. If every person in the world picked up two or three things a day, then maybe things like this would happen less.

i think the thing that irks me the most is smokers who toss their cigarette butts out the car window onto the road/grass/whatever.
it's bad enough that you already have a disgusting smelly habit, you don't need to litter the world with its remnants.

of course - i can't believe at this day in age, given everything we know, that there are people who start or continue to smoke at all. i mean, wtf?

I couldn't even watch once I realized what was coming. Those poor birds, thousands of miles from the source of litter, gorging themselves on bottle caps and other bits of litter until it kills them. It's obscene. Coming from ships that toss their garbage off the side, places where the surf has pulled bits from the shore, other littering and swirling around to make a big plastic island in the center of the ocean. Sigh!

Anybody under the age of 60 who smokes tobacco is an idiot. The Surgeon General's report came out in 1964. The power of willful ignorance and denial is breathtaking.

We can point fingers and discuss this issue till we're all exhausted.
At some point we have to take action. I recycle everything; cardboard,
soda cans, etc. I compost; banana peels, onion skin, kitchen scraps, etc.
I refuse to use a store bag; plastic or paper. My group, the New York
Cycle Club picks up trash along the side of the road. These are organized
events. Join us, the next one is on Oct. 6:

[h=2]9W Cleanup Ride + Market lunch + hills[/h][h=3]Sunday, October 06, 2013 09:30 AM[/h]Time to clean up NYCC's section of 9W.
We'll take back roads through Bergen County, via Tappan, and meet the rest of the club at about 11:30 at The Market on 9W in Palisade. Then we'll fan out and clean up individual portions of the road.
Bring cleat covers for the 9W cleanup job. Latex gloves are provided by the NYCC, but I'd suggest bringing your own work gloves, for a better fit.
NYCC will provide snacks at The Market. You can order additional dishes on your own dime.
After lunch, we'll return south on the relatively flat Piermont & County Rds, and then climb Truman, Churchill, and Walnut, regrouping after each climb so your so-called leader can catch up. The ride will end at Strictly Bikes in Ft. Lee.
The cue sheet is attached. Please bring a copy with you.
The ride may change, depending on the NYCC's plans for the day of the clean-up, so please check back here and on the message board for any last-minute changes.

Starting From:GWB, NJ side bike path entrance

You are friggen awesome!! I recycle and compost EVERYTHING! My actual garbage for the week for a family of 3 (sometimes 4 if the older kid comes visits) is less than a grocery bag. We just had a clean up day today around the creek and at the edge of the open spaces along the highway.

Thanks for being so active in that!

It really doesn't matter what we do as individuals, what we ALL need to do is revamp the way we as a planet discard our waste. Although not to many people will admit to it we do all think "out of site out of mind," but that's just us being the stupid humans we are. I say stupid humans because one day, if we don't find a solution to all the trash we create, we'll be the ones with intestines clogged with our own garbage, dying in the streets, just like those birds.

I get pissed at my own FAMILY over cigarette butts -- and when I say anything, things get tense around the house for about four days. Sometimes, I tell ya.............

I made a vow to myself over a decade ago, that if I caught anybody breaking bottles on the sidewalks/streets, they'd get body-slammed for it -- and ON it. Have yet to do it; maybe it's because they're out when I'm sleeping. My kids don't litter, I don't allow it, and while it's not a constant thing, I catch myself picking things up pretty often.

Littering is lazy, selfish, stupid, immature, and (as you saw) destructive. It's gotten bad enough that we should consider criminalizing IT, instead of weed.

I was pleased when, as a result of their contract with the city, the trash collection company offered recycle bins for residents. Now, if the city would allow a guideline-driven program of COMPOSTING.........

Siu, we get FINED for things like that here; between 'health codes' and the Code Enforcement Department (who fines you for 9" tall grass in your yard), the screws are pretty tight.

Lotta days, I wish I could afford to move.

I've checked out various other cities on another website, and a couple cities have had ordinances that REQUIRED you to keep your own yard poop-free.

Mine doesn't even enforce the code about dogs crapping on the public SIDEWALK.

Code enforcement will eventually give us a note and then fine us if we don't keep our properties fire safe (growth cut low), no trash piling up, etc...

We have three containers from the disposal service. 1 Large green composting container, 1 large recycling container, and 1 teeny tiny garbage container. You have your choice of three sizes for each purpose. We get charged for using them - even if we don't use them, we still get charged (a way to encourage use). They take away everything and reuse it. But I have my own personal composting bin in the back yard and use it for my garden.
