I would assume that if you cross at a point where there's no active crossing inspection, that Homeland Security is watching and aware. They too will know of the possible passing points, as these are potential entry points for drug smugglers and terrorists. I also believe that it's the law to enter in a legal manner, and that means going thru a border checkpoint.
I know that in upstate NY, in the NW Adirondaks, the St. Regis Mohawk native american tribe sits on the Canadian border. There are no US customs facilities within the tribal territory, bu the minute you leave the tribal boundary and into NY State, they are on you like flies on....
And not happy about it.
So my advice is don't risk it. Also be aware that they are probably aware of your plans already, a result of asking on the internet.
