Passport Question

Okay, this is probably a dumb question but I gotta ask? Still need a Passport to cross into the US from Canada by Bike? I was looking at Google Earth and the way I was planning to go into Washington I didn't see a Border crossing anywhere. I know, I'm going to acquire a Passport by next Summer but are there roads that avoid the Border Crossings? Will I get into trouble if I enter the US without checking in?

See government website here: http://www.ppt.gc.ca/planification/occident.aspx

It's not so much going down as coming back.

Here's some info about crossing the U.S. border.

http://www.dhs.gov/crossing-us-borders

Looks like the Canadians are required to carry a Canadian passport, an enhanced driver's license, or a NEXUS travel card when crossing the U.S. border by land.

Are you on a mt. bike and doing this on a trail ?.

I would assume that if you cross at a point where there's no active crossing inspection, that Homeland Security is watching and aware. They too will know of the possible passing points, as these are potential entry points for drug smugglers and terrorists. I also believe that it's the law to enter in a legal manner, and that means going thru a border checkpoint.

I know that in upstate NY, in the NW Adirondaks, the St. Regis Mohawk native american tribe sits on the Canadian border. There are no US customs facilities within the tribal territory, bu the minute you leave the tribal boundary and into NY State, they are on you like flies on....

And not happy about it.

So my advice is don't risk it. Also be aware that they are probably aware of your plans already, a result of asking on the internet.

Your IQ goes up 10 points.

You really, really don't want to be caught in any country without the proper documentation. You might even get into a hassle if you do have the passport but it isn't stamped if you are in the USA.
