travel with phone GPS on whole day

I've got my galaxy S3 for a while. For the first couple of months, its battery life was not bad…but now my phone battery died much faster than before. Each time I went out morning by bike and want to use GPS at dusk but the battery was completely dead and the phone was off.

Once i unplug my phone at 7a.m. and tt 9 a.m. ride to a near town for around 4.5 hours with low brightness and GPS on the whole time.
Reached the city at 11:40. Phone is only at about 40%. Usually my GPS on the most time cuz I need to find routes from street, town, city or landmark to my destination.

I notice not much apps might take up high usage, so I think it is because of my regularly usage on GPS…Since carrying an extra battery or swapping to a bulky battery is acceptable for me so recently I began using extended battery to increase battery life and now I rely to a MPJ extra battery and a battery pack.

Wandering if I am the only one pick up extended battery/battery pack due to heavy use of GPS, or not? ;-)

No, it fairly common. I carry one to power my Garmin 800 on really long rides (I can also use it to charge my phone).

    They are expensive and/or complicated.

An extenal battery is cheap and simple and can be used off of the bike.

That thread only discusses using external batteries for charging (it also discusses other non-power things).

GPS+running nav apps, definitely power intensive on a phone.

They sell extended batteries for the phone itself as one option, as well as the external USB battery connected packs.

GPS is a separate antenna that needs to be powered up, so it chews the battery much faster. Be sure Wi-Fi and bluetooth are off if they're not needed (2 more antennas). You can get a rough estimate of your location with GPS turned off, the phone will just triangulate using the cell signal (less accurate, so it will bounce around a bit). The screen being constantly on will also run the battery quickly.

If it's an option on your phone, you might experiment with forcing 2G networks (disables 3G and LTE). That may not help as there are some battery saving techniques going on behind the scenes when using LTE (and maybe 3G too? I forget), it just depends on which signals are stronger along your route. I keep my phone on 2G during the day (poor 3G at work which drains the battery much faster with it always trying to get on the 3G network) and then toggle when I need faster speeds. There are apps that make the phone jump straight to the settings screen where you can toggle 2g/3g. It takes a few seconds to reconnect on the network when you force the toggle like that, because the network doesn't know you're going to do it so it can't hand over nicely to the other network.

this is the reason i don't use 'map my ride' or similar apps on my phone.

when i get lost, i turn on the gps, find myself, and then quickly turn it off.

now if i could find myself spiritually, psychologically, or cosmologically, i would be set.
