Anyone using U-verse for internet?
 
Currently a Cox customer and thinking about possibly switching. I can get the same service speed for $15/mo cheaper with ATT for one year*, but any hardware expenditures may negate that savings.

*Contacted Cox earlier today (well, yesterday now) about possibly giving me a deal, like the one they are offering new customers (which is still $5 more than ATT and for only 3 months). Instead of trying to work with me, he let it be known that they are upping the bandwidth in 10 days (which will essentially double what I'm currently getting), so any comparison with ATT goes out the window. He tried to get me to "lock in" the pricing for 2 years...

Yup, 1.5meg...but does what I need it to. I'd go for 6.0 if it were available. Comcast has 25meg but I'm not shelling out that kind of jack ($70) for how little I use it. Still, 1.5meg for $15/mo is nice.

We're on U-verse here, as I wasn't going to do the whole cable internet+TV enchilada. Works great.

Had it before I changed areas... Was much more reliable than Crapcast. I'm hoping for google fiber soon.

We have AT&T U-Verse internet and cable. Works well. Dependable, Router is already Wifi, so easy to connect all your wireless enabled devices. Cannot remember the speed, will run a test when I get home and update

I kept the U-verse modem they sent because it was newer and better than the two old ones I keep as spares. But I turned the wireless off and use my own WAP/router (Buffalo running DD-WRT) for the house.

first time u-verse customer here, after years with comcast in 2 different states. so far so good. i have the 18mb speed plus basic cable. speeds are usually pretty good. haven't had service drops yet. pricing is alright. and it's not comcast. i'll call it a win.

Switched from Time Warner to Uverse a few years ago. For the same price, we were getting slower speeds, but didn't have to deal with Time Warner. When we moved from Downtown to Irving, Uverse wasn't an option. The options we had were Time Warner and Verizon FiOS. For comparable speeds, Time Warner is about half the price of Verizon, so we went with Time Warner. In the 2+ years we've been back, we've had one service outage, and my service transfer to our new house was delayed due to a previous customer having his head up his @$$ (his service call was also a transfer, so he needed to have his previous equipment there for the tech to install, but instead it was in the trunk of his daughter's car, which was 35+ miles away).

My point is, we were happy with Uverse, but couldn't keep them when we moved, and are now happy with Time Warner.

I miss sonic.net from the house in CA. They also had shell access and web space and all sorts of stuff if you were a DSL customer.

If I knew for sure that my current modem (Motorola surfboard) would work, I'm fairly sure I'd make the switch. The router shouldn't be an issue so long as the modem is receiving a signal.

i have charter 30 meg internet charter telophones and there caable tv with hbo showtimes etc etc for 120 a month seems like a great deal to me

When I switched from Time Warner to Uverse, it required a change in equipment.

heh. honestly i almost feel it must be regional. when i lived in syracuse NY, we had time warner internet for almost a decade - and my parents still do at the same house. aside from it costing a little much (but don't they all) we never had bad service. always fast, always on.

Ha! I almost ended up working for them at one point, very cool outfit. I believe my father still has his sonic account for email.

I was with them from '05-'07 and then in '12-'13 after Stanford discontinued their free employee DSL. Loved them all to pieces.

When I had service set up at the duplex we moved into, the installer was on time. A second installer even came out to help. They set up the modem/router, and were on their way. I later called TWC to get help setting up the wifi router the way I wanted it. With Uverse, I'd turned off the wifi router on their modem and used my wifi router instead. Their modem was b/g, mine was b/g/n. I wanted to do the same thing with TWC. The tech convinced me to use their router only on g, and use my router only on n. In the 18 months we lived there, we had one service outage.

My first call was cut off by their system after I'd been on hold for 20 minutes but before I got a chance to talk to anyone. My second call the phone tech said I should wait for the tech to show up. I asked her what the point was of giving me an appointment window if I was just supposed to wait for whenever the tech should show. She transferred me to the dispatcher, where I was put on hold for 20 minutes before the call was ended by their system with no one picking up. On my third call, I got a guy who was extremely sympathetic, actually tracked down where the tech was, and put in an escalation for the dispatch supervisor to call me. Before he could get that all set up and confirmed, the tech called to say he was on his way. When he showed up, he apologized & told me that the previous customer was also a service transfer, but the customer didn't bring his equipment with him to the new place. TWC doesn't like their techs to leave a customer w/o having completed the service, so he had to wait for the guy's daughter to show up with the modem. He did a great job setting up my service, and was in & out in less than 20 minutes.

I can't blame TWC for the doofus customer not being prepared. I would have liked for the tech to have called me to let me know he was tied up at another site & was running late, but that's the only negative aspect of their service I've had in years with them.

We had Charter, until they left the region. Got stuck with TWC. Something goes wrong with either internet or television about once a month or two. Calling them's no good, because they have no customer service. If you can get someone on the phone, they have a near indecipherable accent.

Don't get me started on their browser hijacking.....

Well, we visited a ATT "Company Store". Wife signed up for the U-verse internet. CSR chick told us that if we call her when we get the first bill, she'd have half the equipment cost waived. Also said that there was a $100 install charge, but again, call her with the first bill and she'd see if she couldn't get that reduced. So the contract is printed out, she mentions the price... and it is the same as what we're paying now with Cox :twitchy:

Not sure if it was the look on my face or the tone of "errr" that I used, but she remembered that there was a lower price shown on their website. Rather than going back into the system, she took a pen, crossed out the amount, and wrote the lower rate in..."It will be corrected on your first bill"...

Nothing in writing regarding the discount on equipment or installation fees. If this person isn't with the company when that first bill comes, who is to say that these discounts will actually materialize? Or worse, she'll claim that she tried, but was unable to?

Currently w/Cox:

$54.99 for 12 Mbps*, goes up to $59.99 at the end of the month. The speed is going up as well across all tiers and the 12 would increase to 25. They stress that the pricing increase has nothing to do with the bump in speeds.

ATT would be $39.99 for 12 months for the same 12 Mbps.

To muddy the waters, due to a billing dispute, Cox has given me a $5/mo credit ($49.99) for 12 months, so the net savings would be only $120...factor in the "discounted" equipment and install, then savings is down to $20 for the year...

*What is strange is that I've routinely gotten speeds higher than 12 whenever I used speedtest.net when checking out new browsers. I just got a 19.51 w/5 tabs open using Dragon and the Slacker Radio app running in the background.
