In this thread we discuss Mac OSX: Mavericks

I'm currently downloading to install on my 2007 iMac.

Anyone else take the leap yet?

    Hard to argue with FREE.

Will check back once it's installed. *crosses fingers*

I guess my 2004 iMac is out of luck.

But my son's 2012 MacBook maybe so.

So far it's lovely! I can assign colors to individual files now. I'm a photographer so I assigned red to all my photos. Now I can look at them all by just filtering using the red color filter.

isn't that what something like iPhoto is for?
saw the file tagging - not sure what i'd use it for.

Overall the installation seems to have gone well. No breakage issues. All my apps appear to be here and previously installed whatnots are working just fine.

I think it runs a little more slowly - but I was making the jump from Snow Leopard to this, so I didn't do Lion or Mountain Lion.
This is definitely the bare minimum. The 2007 iMac I have only recognizes 3GB of RAM - which I have. But, these days you really need more. I definitely think it would run more smoothly and react much more snappy if I had more RAM. But I can't, so I'm stuck.

Message is new to me. I've still been using iChat with my old AIM account, and I don't have an iPhone so I never used iMessages before, but I'm converting over to that easily enough I guess.

I don't know what Notes is, and I'm not sure if I'd find a use for Reminders - my life just isn't that active.

Launchpad is a cluster****. I dislike that it finds whatever Apps you have, including the hidden ones in sub folders, and then you can't seem to remove those from Launchpad. Sure you can create a new page and dump all the useless ones there, but that's a pain in the ass. It's too much like iOS to be useful to organize and use.

Mission Control is alright. One reason, aside from my old computer, I didn't want to upgrade to Lion/MtLion was that they changed Expose so drastically. I used Expose so much. But thankfully, Mission Control is close enough to the traditional Expose that I'm ok with it.

Overall I guess not a ton more to really think about. There's probably a lot here I'll never use. But, at least I'm finally up to date.

Post any tips/tricks/apps that you find or love!

Hang on - I take that back.

After plugging in my Garmin to upload this mornings ride, my copy of Ascent had "forgotten" that it was registered and some of my ride history. Had to re-load from backups.

Can't help but think this glitch was caused by the software update.

I've upgraded the Mini to it, but my Early 2008 White MacBook is not compatible with it. My wife has downloaded it to her Air, but has yet to install it. I don't think she's put it on her iMac yet.

I went from Lion to it on the Mini. Still on Lion on my MacBook, as it won't take Mtn Lion. The only difference I've found on Mavericks is that the Dock is now an opaque white instead of the translucent 'shade' it was before. Since I use Mini as a DVR, it's a little distracting, but only when I'm not in full-screen mode.

Put it on Mrs. A's MBP on Saturday. She didn't like the invisible scrollbars and doesn't do the two-finger scrolling thing, so I had to go in and reenable the scrollbars. I explained that they were trying to make the Mac interface more like the iPad one.

iPhoto won't run anymore, not a big deal, we never used it, didn't realize it was going to go away.

Our ancient copy of OfficeX is now dead because Rosetta is no longer a thing. The installer warned us about this one. Updated LibreOffice, and we should be okay there.

Iphoto should still work. Mine does. and it's iphoto '08 (7.1.5)
you can always get the new version from the app store, i think it's 14.99 (which is about $10 too much IMO)

Not sure which version it was, the machine had 10.6.8 previously. It's got the little circle with a line through it. Maybe I can reenable it like I did LibreOffice once I got it updated. Like I said, we don't use it, so it wasn't the end of the world.

If you have an old iPhoto installed, the new iPhoto should be a free update.

i thought so too - but in the app store it says 14.99 for me.
Numbers and iMovie were the only free updates for me.

I think my version of Pages, Keynote, and iPhoto are too old. My iWork suite is from 2007. I think we updated Numbers last year sometime because my wife needed it. And I did iMovie the other year because I used it for school. I couldn't update Pages because that newer version required Lion - and I was only on Snow Leopard.

    Weird.
I have not yet updated the Mini, (purchased last January), I'm using right now, due to waiting for verification that XQuartz will work with it.
(I expect they may need to release a new version.)

Running the update-check tells me that I can update iMovie & iPhoto once I'm on 10.9.
It says nothing about wanting money.

You bought your machine just over a year ago - so you have Lion/MtL and the newer versions of those programs.

My iMac is from 2007. I got iWork with it. I never updated the programs (except numbers), and the version of iPhoto (2008) is actually a downloaded version because I wasn't going to pay for the new iLife suite every time. So, mine are probably just too old.
