Badbios, a true malware mystery. What to think?

Meet “badBIOS,” the mysterious Mac and PC malware that jumps airgaps
http://arstechnica.com/security/2013...jumps-airgaps/

Three years ago, security consultant Dragos Ruiu was in his lab when he noticed something highly unusual: his MacBook Air, on which he had just installed a fresh copy of OS X, spontaneously updated the firmware that helps it boot. Stranger still, when Ruiu then tried to boot the machine off a CD ROM, it refused. He also found that the machine could delete data and undo configuration changes with no prompting. He didn't know it then, but that odd firmware update would become a high-stakes malware mystery that would consume most of his waking hours.

In the following months, Ruiu observed more odd phenomena that seemed straight out of a science-fiction thriller. A computer running the Open BSD operating system also began to modify its settings and delete its data without explanation or prompting. His network transmitted data specific to the Internet's next-generation IPv6 networking protocol, even from computers that were supposed to have IPv6 completely disabled. Strangest of all was the ability of infected machines to transmit small amounts of network data with other infected machines even when their power cords and Ethernet cables were unplugged and their Wi-Fi and Bluetooth cards were removed. Further investigation soon showed that the list of affected operating systems also included multiple variants of Windows and Linux...

It's how the machines become self-aware as prophesied in Terminator.

But it will turn out OK. John Connor will save the human race.

Or they could infect us since the possible way those computers infect each other is via sound waves through the computer's speaker and microphone...... The thing is....
...humans can hear too...

They will control us

Nah! I believe the Tea party kind is more like an hiccup in the Darwin's theory of evolution. Something that can't be explained.

bits sent across the AC power connection. AC power networking has been tried in many different ways. Air gap still means the machines are plugged into the same power grid.

If you read the entire article, packets were being sent to a laptop running on battery (no AC connection) with Bluetooth and wifi cards removed. Only when the microphone and speaker were removed did the packets stop. Creepy.

My Toshiba XP laptop has sucko battery. Plus the touchpad buttons died. I think they're just crappy computers.

I think I'd really like this HP I'm typing on right now if it was running W7 instead of W8.

I think I'd like W8 (because I can see my Nikon raw files in Windows and it boots from dead off to the desktop in maybe 30 seconds) if it had programs instead of apps.

I can't get used to thinking of Word or Excel as an app. In my mind they are programs. Apps find Starbuck locations, or take you to a URL or crap like that.

I want to know which one of you read the full article to Wordbiker. That was a nice thing to do.

Have you properly cared for the battery? 1) Don't let it keep charging when it's full. 2) Keep it reasonably cool. 3) Don't charge it from empty to full all at once.

Mine has great battery life because its processor is really weak. The trade-off is that I don't have enough memory for 3D games and things like that.

I don't believe in Ebolavirus. Those primates actually have the flu. That or they've been sharing their needles.
