    Responsive Web Design, Turning Semi-Trucks into Clown Cars on the Fly

    My website is getting old. It was last spring that I first heard the term Responsive Web Design, which lets a webpage scale between a large computer monitor and an iPhone screen.

    So, now I'm looking into it, trying to figure out what do I need to do to make a new site and make it responsive. I did all the js. coding for the last site. It had CSS. How hard could it be to make the new one? I thought.



    I'm feeling like Fred Flintstone in George Jetson's world. It's hard to even figure out what needs to be done. I can probably handle the coding to check what the screen size is, but moving the divs around is a whole new ballgame. Maybe I just have to step back and punt and use a Wordpress site for a while.

    To do it all quick and dirty-like, for a couple of years our department at my old job used a little redirection JS magic that sent you to the mobile site (jquery-based) or the desktop side (Drupal) with a little logic based on your user-agent string. It was only supposed to be in use for one year while the university rolled out some more responsive themes, but I think we ran it for two (inertia and all). The redirection code came from code.google.com somewhere.

    I will agree that responsive themes in a CMS is the way to go to kill more birds with less stones. But if you love doing it yourself, go for it.

    Well, poverty says do it. After some fiddling with divs and percentages, I've gotten it so it looks decent and seems to scale up and down a bit. I think I may practice with my site that already is Wordpress before jumping ship.
