And just to be clear, it's not like she's going to be watching the movies on our whole 16 hours of driving next weekend. We have books on tape, a 3-400 mp3 playlist of kids songs and songs from disney (with a few Beatles, CSNY, CCR, etc. thrown in because I want to raise her with some taste), coloring books, read together books as well. An hour or two of Dora is just one more arrow in the quiver.

+1 (or android tablet). After the kids destroyed a portable dvd player (too many moving parts, too much sand and saliva) I ripped the kids' dvds to a netbook but after that one died I moved the files to an android tablet. Which, I have finally figured out how to stream amazon prime so we can watch other stuff too if we have wifi.

I had considered the Kindle, because it appears as though if you have prime you can download a certain number of their shows from their streaming offerings to take with you. That'd be useful. Plus, it's roughly $100 cheaper than what appears to be the equivalent Google nexus (though those may be better?). Many of our kids dvds are old and/or were bought used so don't have the digital download or whatever that many come with today. If ripping is a possibility, that might not be an issue.

What I am keeping in mind for my next tablet purchase is that it have removable storage in addition to the built-in. So my kids' tablet (really it's a family tablet but somehow they only ever have it) has a 64GB card in it to hold more stuff. But some of the new ones don't have that removable storage.

This is the program I use to rip dvd's and this is the program I use to convert the ripped file to avi that is easier to play and smaller than just the dvd data.

DVD decrypter has trouble w/ the security on pixar dvd's though.
