Well, lots of good advice here. Thanks to all. I'm just not one for sharp cheddar. I'll stick with either American cheese, or
Muenster.

I think we can all agree that a grilled cheese, and some tomato soup, is great comfort food, perhaps the best. This is
especially true now that the winter is starting to hit.

You can have my share of tomato soup or juice. I don't know what it is, but I can't stand either. However, I love salsa, fresh tomatoes, ketchup, spaghetti sauce, etc. There must be something very different about the soup and juice.

I made a grilled cheese last night, using Sargento's mild cheddar, with a slice of tomato. A little kosher salt and some fresh ground pepper
on the tomato produced what I believe was the best grilled cheese I've done lately.

wifey picked up this Cuisinart GR-4N 5-in-1 Griddler for us while holiday shopping

First day after baking it's pretty good...second day it's better and third day (if there is any left) the bread is pretty darn excellent.
50% rye is enough to give you what you want in terms of texture and flavour.
I think the rye goes really well with the cheddar.

I've been wanting to make my own sourdough bread after reading a recipe.
Will have to give this a shot, sourdough is amazing.

I started baking sourdough bread last summer. It's not difficult. You just need a bit of patience.
Commercial bakeries sometimes miss the mark with sourdough as they have time and cost issues.

There is nothing like home made sourdough with home made soup....even better now that cold weather is here.

Two pieces of bread, your choice.
Butter one or both sides, your choice.
Toss bread, butter side down, onto medium heat grill, griddle, frying pan, your choice.
Throw a cheese slice onto both slices of bread. Your choice of cheese. Something that melts easy is better.
Add any other desired adulterants. Tomatoes, pickles, mayos, etc. Your choice.
When cheese begins to melt and the bread is beginning to toast, flip one slice onto the other. Your choice.
Give the sandwich just a little squeeze with the spatula, cut it in half. or not. Your choice.
Eat. Resistance is futile. No choice.

I was with you until you used the word "adulterants. I'm not sure I want my grilled cheese adulterated. Sounds nasty.
