Either way, adds equity. It's actually worthwhile expenses since you can get the money back if you sell....

I don't know but I have never heard anyone with money question the value of it.

The core of our societal problems. We look at those with money as the people with everything.

Yup, I went a little overboard. It's easy to say "I can just pay someone to do that for me".

Laying laminate is easy. No need for anyone to hold your hand. I did it diagonally in my previous house's kitchen. It turned out great.

And it gave me an excuse to buy a sliding compound miter saw.

Most home depot stores have little free classes for stuff like that - check with them before actually paying someone to teach you how to do it!

I wanted hardwood, and the old subfloor was particle board (held down by straight-shank nails... squeak, squeak, squeak), so I hired a friend to put my floor in. Jay has the skills to put it in, but I did the tear-out. I'm glad the old floor was covered by carpet. Eeewwww:

We moved in September. Our old house was in good shape, our new house looked like it was in very good shape. I've been working solid since before we moved- packing, moving, packing more, cleaning the old house, painting in the new house, painting in the old house, installing new carpet in the old house, installing new light fixtures in the old house, repairing light fixtures in the new house, installing new door locks in all outside doors in new house, new metal shelves in new garage, unclogging drains in new house, installing washer and dryer in new house, building a room divider in new house, buying furniture, buying more furniture, cutting up boxes, still unpacking, need a new fence, wife wants new cabinet hardware in new kitchen, ....

Hmmm... my wife and I have been in our house for 13 years. When we moved in, we said "the fence has got to go, and the kitchen sure is ugly". We had the fence replaced early this year, and the kitchen is almost finished now.

    What's the rush?

We had to hire a handyman to do some repair work that was required by the lender when we bought our house in August. As long as he & his wife were there, we had them do some other things that were beyond our skills (leveling a concrete floor, repairing rotted/termite damaged subfloor, etc.).

    Subfloor after repairs made.

Part of the repair of the subfloor included installing laminate flooring. While they were installing it, they gave me a lesson on how to do it myself, since they knew I was going to be installing laminate flooring in the bedroom.

Laminate flooring installed in Master Bedroom by myself.

The hardest part was cutting the boards lengthwise. I don't have a table saw, just a hand-held jigsaw and a miter saw. Luckily the less-than-straight edges are covered by the baseboards.

One tip I'll pass on is to read the instructions that are included in the laminate packaging. I'm glad I did. The lesson from the handyman helped, too.

Good luck, and be patient. I started the bedroom in the corner by the door to the hall, and when I got to the alcove part of the L (top right corner of pic), I realized that I was going to be working backwards, so I had to pull up everything I'd done and start over (not that big of a deal). I then started in the alcove corner of the L and worked my way across the room. The alcove part took one day (including the aborted attempt). The rest of the room took another day. The room is about 250 sq feet (18' x 18', minus a 9' x 8' bathroom).
