I don't know how to vote. I love homemade fruitcake (Alton Brown's Free Range Fruitcake) but hate the store bought versions with those weird plastic red and green "fruits" in them.

Since most things are better homemade than store bought I'll reserve judgment. That being said, I've yet to have one I haven't hated yet.

I love fruitcake, although the one I make is light, lemonly and really tasty. But I also like that dense, rum soaked, heavy, nasty cake you buy at the store... if anyone wants my Christmas Cake recipe (I am making a batch this weekend) let me know. Best to make now and let sit awhile before Christmas... also great as a hiking snack!

Yours sounds tasty. Are you taking orders?

I'm with Cbad, in that I'd rather feed a store bought fruitcake to a trebuchet than my mouth.

These are acceptable fallbacks.

...the poll does not allow honest response from those of us with a love/hate relationship to fruitcake.

Hate is not too strong a word (for me) to describe fruitcakes.
But I'm not a dessert person.
I'm a cheeze-its and glass of red wine type of person.

It's alot of work to make fruitcake... I will however post the recipe. Makes a great Christmas morning gift for neighbor and friends - great with coffee! Plus when the cakes are baking, the kitchen fills up with a nice toasty smell of lemons and almonds and walnuts and candied cheeries, pineapple and citron... mmm mmm good!

A brick laying competition might be more appropriate.

Nothing wrong with a proper fruitcake.

Claxton fruitcake is not proper except as a regifting object to a despised acquaintance.

In fact some of my favorite relatives are right proper fruitcakes.
