People always scoff at me...

...when they see me throw these away rather than give them to the needy or discount them.

And here is the reason.

I don't mess with any questionable fruit or veggies. Lots of them naturally produce some really dangerous alkaloids... And then there's the human factor.

I accidentally cooked a green potato once, not knowing what was in it. It was super bitter, though, so after a bite, I promptly threw it in the compost.

Now I know why. Thanks.

P.S., the Wikipedia article has some good info on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solanine

If you are unsure if your Russet potato or even a red potato has green, simply take a very sharp knife and lightly scrape away some of the skin. That exposes the green underneath.

"Further, the toxins of green potatoes reduce when you peel off the greener layer from it; that is the reason why, fried chips pack contains lesser hazards of green potatoes because they have to peel it off before turning it into chips. This pointer would help shedding off the doubts of people about the probability of using green potatoes in manufacturing chips or snacks."

Peel off the greener layer?

Shedding off the doubts?

Is this perhaps a computer translated article?

Me too, before I started growing my own. Then I realized that they come out of the round brown and turn green as they age and get ready to sprout the next generation. Interesting thing is I've never seen any of my home-grown potatoes turn green. I suspect that's because I keep them in the bottom tray of the fridge where it's dark, while the supermarket potatoes sit out in the light 24/7.

And I used to eat the green ones all the time too, but I think Wikipedia has the answer to why I survived:
  • 30–80% of the solanine develops in and close to the skin.
  • Deep frying potatoes at 170C (338F) is known to effectively lower glycoalkaloid levels (because they move into the frying fat), as does boiling (because solanine is water soluble)
Most of the time I peel them to make chips or mash.

Anyone know the actual numbers of people who die each year from solanine-poisoning?
I wonder what's the most common source of food-poisoning fatalities?

One of my uncles in Scotland almost died from eating some shiny purple mushrooms he picked. At hospital, they said in another 15-20 minutes, he'd been paralyzed and dead.

I was going to say it sounds like it was written by a sixth grader as a science project.

I guess this also means that eating green potatoes with green meat is a bad idea too.
