jdon vs The Martin Mars

Just watching Mighty planes episode on the Martin Mars water bomber. Why do I get the feeling jdon would love to take it for a spin. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1y6Tnczjuw

I would be the first guy in line. If I am not mistaken, they are now down to one. Just Hawaii Mars remaining. Iwas living in Coquitlam the last time I heard the pair of them fly overhead. What an incredible sound. Love big radials.

Too bad there aren't too many A1 Skyraiders left around you could buy (if you had the money that is). Those had the same Wright Cyclone as the B29 did but only one of them. I believe they'd carry more weight than a B17 or at least as much.

Those crazy sleeve valve WW2 British radials are probably pretty big as well but I don't know what it would take to keep one running.
Here's a Douglas A26 for sale for a cool $200,000
They only have 2000 hp radials but there's 2 of them and they'll move right along according to my dad who crewed on them.

All of those are deep pocket airplanes to my mind. That crazy sleeve valve contraption that powers it sounds even louder than the huge Wright Cyclone to me even though it's about a couple hundred horsepower short of it.

Beautiful machine that one.

Flying the North is a lot of fun in your 20's. I am about 30 years beyond that kind of fun.

Big amphibious radial for my money is an Albatross. The Mars is pretty special though.

I wouldn't turn down a ride in one. I have had the opportunity to crawl around a Canso (Canadian PBY Catalina) that's being restored in Fairview, Alberta: http://www.savethecanso.com/
My wife's cousin helped drag it out of the Northwest Territories and lends a hand in between farm crops.

I got to take a ride in this B17 once for free at an airshow at Brown Field south of San Diego. We buzzed the field. I was talking to the pilot and mentioned that my uncle bought his bronze star posthumously in the 351st Bomb Group, 8th AAF and he invited me aboard. I have to say it was eerie though looking out the waist gunner's window.

My uncle was normally a tail gunner but was substituting as a waist gunner for a different crew when he got killed.

We've got a Canso at a small local museum I sit on the board of. Ours needs quite a bit of TLC, but the centrepiece is a Lockheed Hudson bomber. I always preferred the Canso.

If only there were still a Martin Mariner still out there. My grandfather (dad's dad) was in Mariners in the Navy.

Or the P-5 Marlin, the last of the Navy's piston flying boats.

I think the Grumman Goose is a pretty flying boat. Here's about 10 minutes of one in flight:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwNI4hWAYoE

*************************************

Here's a 45 minute documentary on the Martin Mars for anybody who hasn't yet seen it.

Smithsonian Channel: Mighty Planes : Martin Mars

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpVqueH-x3Q

*************************************

And here's an hour long video about the Martin Mars and lots of other giant flying boats of the past.

Wings: The Giants - flying boats series, episode 4

Thanks Zinger! Great links. I have about 600 hours of a Goose in flight. All memory though, few pics, no videos.
