Is December 26th the Worst Day of the Year?

"Next to a circus there ain't nothing that packs up and tears out faster than the Christmas spirit." (Kin Hubbard)

I was out of food for one of the dogs so I ventured out to Petsmart near the mall; sad to say, by just a brief foray into reality it is obvious that a majority of the population has returned to their normal F-you, ego centered selves. Oh well, just 364 more days 'til Christmas Eve (possibly the best day of the year). I hate the day after Christmas!

We enjoy Boxing Day. If you avoid the sales at the Malls, it is a nice relaxing day and often includes the same Christmas spirit while visiting the friends and family that didn't make the Christmas cut. I actually never work Christmas through new years so we manage to extend the niceties of the season through to Jan 2.

I am working too but not grumpy - happy I am safe and away from the Malls and the traffic and craziness that goes with...

I'll take January 2nd as the worst. Holidays are OVER, all the crap has to be packed up or paid for.

I had an enjoyable day. Didn't work, ate left overs and got 40 miles solo. Now, if I would have left my house in/on anything other than a bicycle, it may be another story.

My parents have had a tradition for a few years: all of the adult kids and whatever portion of the next generation can make it gather at their house on Boxing Day for Chinese take-out. That leaves Christmas day for the other families to get together, plus my mom doesn't have to do as many dishes afterwards. All the take-out containers get rinsed and recycled. It can still be a pile of dishes- my younger sister has two teenage boys and just got remarried to a guy with 3 boys of his own.

I missed it this year- work schedules kept me from making the trip. Shucks.

I don't know how you city folks do it. I live in the middle of nowhere and went to the "local" mall and Walmart on Black Friday out here in the sticks. Wifey texted asking how crazy it was. The busiest day of the year and the mall looked like it does on the slowest day of the year in the city.

Was at Walmart today. Should be crazy with people lined up at customer service with returns and everyone shopping the after Christmas stuff. Same thing, really busy for us country hicks in the sticks, but the equivalent of the slow days in the city in the opposite direction. Had I went south to the city, I probably wouldn't have even been able to walk through the store.

Our Christmas celebrations extend over the holidays with Christmas day, Boxing day, and New Years day being those days we set aside for close family and friends... we barely shop for anything at Christmas and avoid all the post Christmas madness.

Ah, the hidden beauty of mail order gifts...no line for mail order returns. Actually, didn't find stores crowded as I went by Costco and Target. However, when I went to WalMart for a box and saw the packed parking lot, did a quick U-Turn and proceeded to my original intended store, Home Depot. It is just that WalMart was closer and remembered enroute that they would have it.

"The Day After Christmas" has a name ... it's called "Boxing Day".

Boxing Day is all right. It is a stat holiday, so most people have the day off (or get paid more for working!).

And so we spent the day with family, watching cricket and the start of the Sydney to Hobart race ... and then on the way home, we stopped to walk on the beach, and then to talk to my family through Skype.

I can definitely think of worse days!

When I worked in retail the day after was pretty bad. However, now I get to do things like take the day off and go for a bike ride.

Sounds like a nice day!

It was possibly the best day I've had this year. The wife, daughter, son-in-law, and one granddaughter went shopping. The eight-year-old granddaughter and I spent the day together. State park > lake > airport (where we met a Korean War jet jockey and got to sit in his home-built air hotrod) > home to split fire wood (her request) > shot BB guns (she and her sister each got a Daisy Red Rider carbine from Santa) > built a fire in the fire place. She had never shot any kind of weapon at all. After a while, she was shooting out the 10-ring and knocking down empty coke cans with regularity. What a day
