Some friends were talking about how their high school aged kids all listened to the same music we did when we were in high school, and some even shared the same itunes account. Their kids just weren't that interested in modern music, and we all agreed you couldn't force kids to listen to something they didn't like. And that the music we listened to in high school was a lot different that the music our parents listened to.

I usually listen to Sound Opinions , and have been exposed to a lot of new music that I both like and wouldn't have been exposed to otherwise. There is good new music out there, it's just harder to find with all the listening choices we have now.

Hey, that kind of thinking isn't in line with the "grumpy old folks grumpin' " theme of this thread, now is it? I've considered the idea a few times, that there's a generation gap thing going on, but so far, I'm mostly too lazy to look into the new stuff, to see what "might" be good. That sort of nonsense is for young folks, with time & energy to burn.

i'm not into searching for new music as much as i was a few years ago, but then i was downloading a lot of stuff and relying on kexp and metacritic for help. metacritic works like imdb where you can see ratings and follow band links. you can also search for best albums of the year, going back several years. this is how i found so many great albums from pj harvey, besnard lakes, will oldham, yeah yeah yeahs, etc etc. check it out.

I'm 56, and I must agree with most of the sentiment here: Most of today's music sounds like absolute u-know-what. But, I am also very much aware that I'm not the desired demographic. I'm not a member of the group that spends ≈ $80.00 per week in a shopping mall. Heck, you have to darn near drag me, kicking and screaming, into any such place. So it goes. When driving, I generally listen to WZLX (classic rock) or WROR (classic hits. A little of everything)

Thoughts on Lady Gaga: Say what you will, Gaga is definitely not stupid. I predict she will eventually move into the management end of the music business, say, in about another ten years, give or take. She'll probably make a fine music industry executive. Out: The bizarre stage outfits. In: Tailored womens' business suits. Just a prediction, of course.

But there does seem to be more terrible popular music than before!

It is far too easy for crappy half-baked acts to produce music and distribute it. Gone are the days when you had to be good enough to survive a few gigs before you could even dream of making a recording, let alone get any distribution.

I used to think the CRTC requirement for Canadian content was crap, but there were a lot of great local Indie bands that got airplay and exposure because of it. Thanks CRTC.

despite everything i said prior to this, i love me some lady gaga. her songs are catchy as hell and at least she's got talent and has a great singing voice. is she weird? absolutely. but she's also brilliant.

They aren't kids and have been working and playing together for a while... Beth Hart achieved a pretty decent measure of fame in the early 90's and then disappeared from the mainstream and Joe Bonamassa is a prodigy.

She was working the fringes until he heard her singing in a club...

as many posters on here have said previously, there is plenty of good new stuff but nearly everything that comes across the mainstream media outlets is nonsense.
if you're still listening to commercial radio (unless it is obscure college radio, midnight shows and the like), you're screwed.
radio was the medium 30 years ago.

a good place to start-regardless of style or taste- is npr.org/music, there is classical, jazz. indie rock, rap, et al. plenty of listening availability.

I've gone towards world music. Casting my net wide for music I've never heard before.

The only modern music I can think of that I like is Lana Del Rey, but I think it's mostly because I have an insane crush on her. The only word I can ever think of to describe her is "sultry"

Precisely! It's all cyclical (no pun intended). As someone who focused on Music Production in college, I kept my eye on the Billboard charts to see what was "hot" at the moment. Eventually, you see/hear all the same stuff over; especially if you have a keen ear and realize that there are technically only so many actual notes available (A through G# plus the sharps/flats in-between, save for the spaces between E & F and B & C).

People who grew up listening to Elvis or even Deep Purple will [mostly] dislike today's music, the same as when I now listen to some of the same genres I listened to fervently in college, I am bored by them.

    Let's see
    House of the Rising Son
    Johnnie B Goode
    Long Tall Sally
Many versions of Midnight Special-Leadbelly to Creedance Clearwater
    St James Infirmary
Here Comes the Sun-Beatles or Richie Havens
    Some Roling Stones
"Talking Bout My Generation" the stuttering one by The Who

They are absolute tripe next to "Bust that *****es Ho and bust caps on cops" real art
Rap-pitiful poetry *****es Hoes Benjamins Cops Pigs 5-0 Drugs -yeah real artless art
    Not even good rhymes
    Yeah current stuff-artless crap-
    Current movies-mainly the same story-
Compare a "little movie" like Maltese Falcon-lots of can't take your eyes off them actors-even the cops-not the leads-real pros-
Sidney Greenstreet Peter Lorre Elijah Cook Jr Bogart Mary Astor vs Keanu Reeves Tom Cruise Brad Pitt
    Gotta be kidding!!
Tyrone Powell vs Brad Pitt gotta be kidding me???
Watch Zorro with Tyrone Powell-Akim Tameroff-Linda Darnell Basil Rathbone vs even decent actors like that Brit(forget his name-plays Hannibal Lector) and the Hispanic guy who married Tippi Hedrons daughter-Melony Griffin?? Those two actors -good actors-much much better than average-but no comparison to the older movie.

Yeah I am old-since I am 100% convinced music and movies and TV-much better
Watch Twilight Zone-watch any current POS series-pitiful crap by comparison-
women with HUGE fake chests-guys obviously on steroids-those muscled up actors-not from"just working out"
    Yeah I am OLD

but there are also a lot of really fantastic bands.

a few to give a listen to:

    Arcade Fire
    Sigur Ros
    David Gray
    Florence + the Machine
    Phantogram
    The Gaslight Anthem
    The National
    The Black Keys
    The Lumineers

and possibly one of the best bands of the past decade: WILCO
Excellent music taste! a big +1 for Wilco, toss in some Mumford & Sons and The Avett Brothers for some more fine tunes!
I can't stand the mainstream commercial radio nowadays, too much repetition and too much time wasted with stupid commercials! My favorite stations usually are the local independent community radio and NPR. For everything else I have Pandora pretty well fine tuned.
