    First Night Scam

Does your city celebrate First Night? What a scam this is.

O.K. for starters it is NOT First Night! It is Last Night / First Morning. First Night does not occur till the next day!

What is worse is cities pay a license fee for the privilege of using this goofy name. From what I have read they get minimal support, some guidelines and "the integrity of the brand". Participants do pay a fee to attend but it is hard to believe a company makes money for doing almost nothing.

I think I will start a new organization called First Morning. At least the name of the event will be correct.

Looks like Little Rock is smart enough not to pay for this scam. At least I am not finding anything in a search.

Years ago I visited Bauxite, AK on business. Is ALCOA still there?

I think First Night USA is US only. First Night celebrations are pretty common in Canada and typically are family friendly, no alcohol, outdoor events that celebrate performing arts.

With a name like Bauxite? Of course ALCOA is there.

Apparently North Little Rock has a home-grown event called NATURAL STATE OF MUSIC focusing on Arkansan artists with drinks and fireworks.

Never heard of First Night. My neighborhood has First Gang Shooting but sometimes it's not until the 2nd or 3rd.

We got First Night in Portsmouth NH. Good time, basically the whole city goes into party mode. Have not been in decades.

Bring cash, expect to drop a bunch because you are not going to want to be out on the streets when it's 10degF... Parking is a b!otch, too, so expect to walk at least a mile to get to the outskirts of the action and face the same walk back, when it is colder and darker.

So not my scene, so not my idea of something to do on a winter night. Rather cuddle up at home in a sleeping bag with a book or some TV series marathon cued up. Or drink myself into a coma. Or trip ballz.

We party in the street most nights in Savannah. In fact tonight at midnight they will be having the big to-go cup drop on River St.

    From GPB:

SAVANNAH, Ga. — It might be five o'clock somewhere. But at midnight on New Years Eve, Savannah residents will raise their cups to a giant replica of the humble 6 oz. plastic cup. It's a drinking tradition in Savannah known as the "to go" cup. (photo VRLobo888)

Savannah is starting a new New Year's Eve tradition.

At the stroke of midnight, when New York drops its ball and Atlanta drops its peach, Savannah will raise its cup.

Merchants on the historic waterfront are sponsoring the night of revelry, which celebrates both the new year and Savannah's cherished tradition of being able to drink on the streets year-round.

The six-foot-tall steel and plastic cup replicates those taken "to go" from bars.

A long time ago in the biggest town in the area they participated in the program (late 90's I think?), it was actually really cool in the beginning but it pretty much just degraded into as you say OP a massive scam.

It doesn't mean you haven't already had drinks. There are just none served at the venues.

People are broad-minded. They'll accept the fact that a person can be an alcoholic, a dope fiend, a wife beater and even a newspaperman, but if a man doesn't drive, there's something wrong with him.

Is the true that the First Night started in Boston around 1976?

I heard about a First Night celebration in Whitman, MA where the Tollhouse (chocolate chip) cookie was invented. They were planning to drop a 6 foot diameter metal replica of a chocolate chip cookie at midnight.
