Mac people, help me out.

I have a MacBookPro (1,1) from the olden days here and I need a MacOS X disc for it (largely so I can set up BootCamp). The 1,1's were apparently strange in that they had a 64-bit capable processor, but 32-bit firmware, and so need a 32-bit OS X setup disc. I understand Apple only made 10.4 and 10.5 for these machines, and a regular old 10.5 disc doesn't seem to do the trick.

So would any of you good people have a Mac OS X setup disc for a MacBook Pro (1,1)? I will reimburse for shipping.

Don't have anything that old. If it's over like 2 years old around here, we never find it again.

I've got a 10.5.1 Leopard disc.

I don't know if it would do you any good I used it on our iMac with a PowerPC.

I'll be happy to send it to you.

Unless it is also boots on the x86 Macs, it wouldn't be worth it.

I have tried a 10.4 universal (from my old PowerBook) and a 10.5 disc from a friends MacBookPro and get the "This disc cannot be used to install Mac OS X on your Mac" (or similar) message every time. They boot and I can format the drive, but that is about it.

That model number may prove very handy. Thank you.

A Tiger Intel disc might do it... but then I won't have BootCamp. But it will be better than nothing. I may also stick the OpenSUSE disc I installed it with back in there and see if I can fix the boot loader that way.

I found the documentation for Tiger, but I can't find the CD.

I recommend running VMware Fusion to get Windows on that box. Then you can use the MacOS and Windows apps at the same time without the annoying reboot into one or the other. I've also got Linux, Solaris, FreeBSD and NeXTSTEP running on my MacBook as well.

There are two issues that may cause the 'Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer' error:

1. Improper disk-partitioning. The disk must be erased and prepared just right:
- boot from OS-X installer CD and run Disk Utility
- select drive on left and check that SMART status shows "verified", it will refuse to install on a drive that does not have SMART=verified
- then click on Volume Scheme and pick 1 partition
- then click Options and set partition-scheme to GUID, it cannot be Apple or Windows (MBR/FAT32) partition-scheme. Then OK
- select format-type of Mac OS Extended (journaled)
- then click on Partition and let it run
- next select the new Volume that just appeared below the drive and pick Erase tab
- click on the Erase tab in the main window.
- select format-type of Mac OS Extended (journaled)
- click on the Security button, turn on option for Zero Data and click on OK
- click on the Erase button, might take a while.
- quit DiskUtility and go back to the installer and finish OSX installation

I've seen quite a few drives that would cause the 'Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer' until they were completely wiped with the double-erase procedure. Might have something to do with bad-sectors and the full-erase will scan and map out bad sectors.

2. Retail versus model-specific restore or upgrade CD/DVD. If you use an upgrade or model-specific installer CD/DVD from a different model, it will not work. If you have a retail CD/DVD of 10.5 Leopard (MB427Z/A ) or 10.6 SnowLeopard (MC573Z/A), then it will install fine on the MacBookPro 1,1.

It's running OpenSUSE right now, but an update broke GRUB and I haven't been able to fix it.
