My mac has suddenly stoppoed playing videos. what's up with that?

All of a sudden my mac won't play videos. If I go to youtube, all I see is a black square where the video and control buttons would normally be. The videos people post onFoo, same thing. I see a black square and that's it. There's no button to push play, pause or anything else. Both firefox and safari do the same thing. I aso recently downloaded google chrome and that doesn't work either. When I go to youtube, I type in the search window and I don't even see the letters being typed, but when I hit enter, the url at the top changes to reflect the video I want to see, but it never goes to that page.

Does anyone have an idea what might be wrong?

Number ONE culprit to check is that your Adobe Flash player is current. YouTube runs of Flash and if your Flash player isn't up to date it won't work.

EDIT: You also have to allow plugins in Preferences. Its most likely something to do with the Adobe Flash Player.

What Anthony said It's most likely Adobe Flash. But before you go to their site and download the latest version and install try running a simple permission fix with disk utilities. Good luck.

Yep, most likely adobe flash player not up do date, or somehow turned off in preferences. To determine which version of flash you have, go here: http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

Keeping your version of flashplayer up to date is mission critical. If you are running Google Chrome, this is done for you. I know, I know,,, Google is evil. So what isn't, when you get right down to it?

Permissions repair:

-while logged in as admin, open applications/utilities/Disk Utility
-Select your drive in the left side panel
-click on the repair permissions button.

This is a very minor maintenance procedure. Generally done after an OS update. Get to know that Disk Utility. It is very handy and quite powerful.

As for Mac Vs Windows, Vs Linux... I run all three, for various purposes. Put that in your smoke and pipe it.

^^^^
This

And use the custom install so you don't get a lot of unwanted crap with it. Uncheck everything but the Adobe.

If you're using safari it has a power saving mode that won't automatically start flash, you have to click on the box to activate it.

Asking for a friend.

If it's not playing videos, try downloading and installing the latest Flash player. As above, much of the video content nowadays is Flash-powered.

It's worth mentioning again: Folks, no matter which operating system you like, make sure flashplayer is up to date. Checking once per month
would not be excessive, given how often it gets updated.

Update, 2/5/14:

Here is an article regarding the latest attack using a flaw in flashplayer.

Yeah, my wife does this at least twice a month and she still can't get videos to play on her Windows machine. It infuriates her that they work fine on my Windows machine...not the least because I am unbelievably ignorant about Windows, so it's purely by accident or luck that anything ever works on my PC!
