The "new" drone...quadcopter

Have y'all seen the new "hobby photo toy" called the quad-copter? It is causing quite the stir, a small remote control helicopter with a camera built on that has quite the range and is nearly silent. There have been a lot of discussions on it from a peeping tom standpoint.
Aside from the controversial aspects of it, one of my neighbors ordered one and took some photos with it.

Pretty darn capable machine for a hobbyist to be playing with.

I do a good amount of architectural photography for work and have been using one several times a week for a few months now.

Beats the snot over climbing a ladder or renting a cherry picker.

My shop's head mechanic got himself a drone with a built-in HD camera. It's controlled via wi-fi with his tablet, and it's pretty slick, I must say. The video quality is great, and it has various GPS accessories and such which could be used for some awesome mountain biking follow-along shots.

That's awesome. Fun and practical.

I think you can get one in the $100 range, obviously a cheap one. If anyone here had one, I would expect it to be Windy.

I was supposed to be finding out how many solar panels they have on the roof.

My biggest pet peeve is calling these things the media buzzword, drones. They are radio controlled model aircraft, nothing more. They use the buzzword drone to make them sound sinister and evil. the buzzword drone makes the audience think of military drones of which these are nothing of the sort.

The real fun part is, add a transmitter to the aircraft, a receiver ground station, and a pair of googles for video feed and fly it FPV (First Person View.)

In 2006 when I started flying RC, I read of a guy on RCGroups who posted videos of his Easystar (motorized glider style aircraft) with a camera fed back to video googles. If I recall, he said he had about $5000 wrapped up into the system.

Today, for $100 (plus googles) I could put a setup together with a camera small enough for my 16 inch wingspan 1.3 ounce T-28 airplane.

These quadcopters are cool, but what is even better for video is the tricopter. The tricopter flies much smoother and has a cool swooping movement when flying for better video.
