Failure Sucks

I think I'm going to go feel sorry for myself for a while.

That is all...

Would you like me to kick you in the shins and make it feel better?

Kidding.

What's wrong?

I've made the decision to close up my law office. Been bleeding money the last six months and enough is enough. The legal job market is so bad that there's always someone who will undercut you on prices for legal services so it's real hard to make any money on your own.

Sorry to hear that....but a corp. lawyer position can pay pretty well.

Yeah the problem is there are 5 or 6 lawyers for every open position. I'm going to take a couple of weeks and do a hard assessment of where I'm at and where I want to go next.

I hear you there. Computer graphics is suffering from global competition. I saw one company asking for an artist with solid skills and 5 years experience at nearly minimum wage. Good luck with your decision.

I know exactly what you are talking about. After many years working in a large law firm, and later as an in-house corporate attorney, I decided to try my hand at having my own practice.

For years the practice was lucrative and I did well.

Then the economy hit a major snag and business dried up.

When I finally closed my office I sure felt like a failure. Now, more than a decade later, I realize that it was the best move I could have made. I am a happy camper and have none of the stresses associated with running a practice--and as an added bonus, I have more time to ride my bikes.

BB, you may feel like a failure now, but the day will come when you will realize that this was a good move. Hang in there man!

I almost closed my tax office a couple years back. When I told my landlords I was closing up shop they gave me free rent from May-January to keep me as a renter. The next year I was able to bring in a ton of new business (still not enough business to quit my day job though).

I never made that much money but I covered expenses and put a few bucks in my pocket. But hey I've never made as much money as I probably should have so ...

Are you in Atlanta? The federal government always is looking for attorney's. What type of law do you practice?

A venture failing is a major disappointment but it is a great learning lesson. You are better for having tried. Forge ahead bb.
