On the last flight back from shanghai, I flew United. several movies were playing at any time, I made the mistake of watching Premium Rush, but it was free. Switched back and forth between napping, soduku and reading. Went economy class. On other trips if I get business class I usually plan on sleeping though most of it aided by adult beverages.

Cheers,

Yeah, tell your seatmates you're an air marshall. Then take out your Glock and give it a good cleaning (the clips, too).

Seriously, I read a lot. One one occasion while was flying to Buenos Aires the couple sitting next to me gave me a complete layout map of what to see in the city, especially some of the hidden 'gems'. That was a trip to remember.

I bring a big book with me and alternate between reading and twitching fitfully. At 6-foot-4, I'm a press-fit in Southwest's one-size-fitz-all class. I literally can't move more than an inch in any direction.

Airplanes have been upgraded now so that you've got a little screen on the back of the seat in front of your, similar to what you'll find on the treadmill at the gym. You can choose from a wide variety of movies, TV shows, music and games.

On a flight from Melbourne to Los Angeles (17 hours), for example, I'll get settled in my seat and then check through all the movie options available. I'll line up my top 3 or 4 movies and start watching. After several movies, I'll start browsing the TV shows until we land.

However, apparently domestic flights within the US don't necessarily have that option. Very odd.

read and listen to music....on a long flight I also do yoga poses for sitting, especially for leg circulation, and I'll get up and go to the area in the back of the plane for some mini lunges and a modified mountain pose.

Yeah ... I have a genetic predisposition toward developing blood clots which I discovered after developing quite a severe case of DVT.

So ... I can't sit for more than an hour on a plane. Makes sleeping rather disjointed. But it means that I'm up and pacing around the plane (and no doubt annoying other passengers. ) every hour. Sometimes I'll just stand in the aisle and do calf raises for 5 or 10 minutes.

I've often thought that airlines should remove a row of seats and install a set of treadmills. Passengers could sign up for 10 minutes at a time to go for a walk or jog mid-flight.

For leg circulation while seated I do thigh lifts and then ankle rolls with a stretched out leg. I also do spine twists and rolls while seated.

+1 on the treadmill

I do whatever I can too ... I used to take a window seat (and I miss window seats) but now I take aisle seats so that I can be up and down and stretch and do the ankle rolls and everything.

(I also wear compression stockings, drink lots of water which gets me up into the toilet quite frequently, and I have to have a series of abdominal injections because of the DVT)

Download some radio program podcasts from CBC like Wiretap (oddball humour), "Q", Quirks and Quarks (for science geeks) and "Ideas", and from the BBC like "The Why Factor". I look forward to flights so that I can listen to these without too much distraction. Others might want to weigh in with their own favourites.

My first flight was probably before you were born.

The thylacine were in North America at the time, they migrated to down under later on. They walked.

I normally watch a movie, listen to music, chat with co-workers, do a puzzle or two, read emails, eat, drink water, slide the seat back and snooze, read the paper, look out the window talk on the radio, monitor computers. That's about it.

These are on JetBlue flights in the U.S.
Southwest airlines has free TV via Wi-Fi on many flights, but Internet access is an extra charge.

After a 12 hour flight I'd suggest a window bulkhead seat (usually good leg room) and awake about first 2-4, sleep mid 5-7 and awake final 2. I watched two movies, read a book, ate two meals, had a long conversation with my buddy, & finally slept last 4. That first 8 was a flammimg B.

I can't read while flying it gives me motion sickness. I'd probably opt for the audio book.
