I'm glad there are people out there who truly love animals, and are willing to work hard to help them. Especially shelter workers and vets who are doing pro bono care. Life is hard enough without the elderly having to give up their friends.

I just found it all around bad, from the terminal pooch to the seniors with no health care.

Oh, I agree. The story kind of leaves this piece out, though.

Very sad...as someone with 5 pets, it's hard to read that without first thinking "How can they do that?!", but upon further inspection, you see that they are in dire straits and just don't want the poor dog to suffer. As someone who's had to put down family pets before, I can say with experience that it is not an easy thing to do; not even close. I'm happy that the rescue will take care of food and veterinary expenses, although I wonder how long it will be before his condition worsens and they're right back at square one. I really hope the best for ALL their quality of life from this point on. They sound like they have their hearts in the right place.

Putting our dog down was probably one of the hardest things I've ever had to do, and that dog had a verifiable behavior problem.

I'm sorry to hear about that. I know there's no Immortality Serum we can administer to them, but I always make it a point to tell folks how sorry I am to hear about such a passing, especially when they've had to make such a hard decision. I think we all wish they could go peacefully in their sleep (same for us), but unfortunately the reality of that's not likely.

I have a kitty who has a weird strain of Hepatitis...it's not communicable to the other animals, but it caused her liver to almost completely shut down in 2012. She would barely eat, and when she did eat, it all came right back up...she ended up weighing 3lbs...a full-grown cat down to only 3lbs. We got a very good specialist for her who shot straight with us: Either it's treatable and she's going to live a few more years, or he'd recommend we have her euthanized (this was at the same time that our dog was losing feeling in his front legs due to a nerve sheath tumor, and we didn't know whether or not we'd have to have him euthanized, as well). After we got home from those appointments, well...I think that's the hardest I've ever cried in my entire life, and I've lost a lot of people over the years.

Again, I am sorry to hear that. Have you guys brought another furry child into your home since then?

Just another hairless child for now. I figure once they get a little older and more predictable, we'll be ready for another dog. Perhaps another couple of years. Mrs. A is allergic to cats, so a dog it will be.

But no more Taiwanese rescue dogs with fudged ages and fear-aggression problems, please.

I think the only time I cried more than when we put her down is when my grandfather died. But at least I could drive home from Grandpa's service without having to pull over to cry some more. I held her the whole time, too.

Sorry to hear that. All negativity aside, congrats on the hairless one!! I'm sure in a few years you'll find a pooch that fits your home and your family!
