If the music is copyrighted, and without the band providing a statement allowing you to copy it, then I would think it was illegal.

watching a video from youtube is the same thing as downloading it.

chances are the person who put it on youtube violated copyright law but if they band hasn't had it removed, they probably aren't going to come to your house and check if you downloaded an mp3 off youtube

They can decide whether to sell, or not sell, their own work.

I haven't been able to download anything from YT for 6 months. My RealPlayer goes thru the motions, but at the end it says "cannot finish, try again". Bugger.
Dailymotion stopped it over 2 years ago.
So I'm glad I got busy and saved a hundred or so.

Last year I complained to them about all the scumsters who copy and repost the second a new vid came out. Grand theft.
Dredging thru all those copies in searches was a total drag. So I don't have to worry about that anymore.

As for paying for music online ..... A WHOLE DOLLAR... Go to hell greedy bastards. A few million at 10 cents is a hellava lot of money. I never spent much anyway.

A CD costs what, $13 or so? I don't even know any more. But you used to be stuck buying the whole CD even if you only wanted one or two songs. Now you can buy it song by song. If you feel like you're not getting value for your dollar, you could try to find some new artists that aren't selling millions.

I've noticed that my flash video downloader plugin no longer works on YouTube although it does on Daily Motion and Viooz streaming movie site.

I haven't had time to check into why yet and am not sure whether it's a software problem on my side or an upgrade in the protection on their side. I've been using the "Ant" plugin for Mozilla for years for this flawlessly (and keep it upgraded) but it's increasingly non-functional at more sites lately and YouTube seems to be one of them.

^^^
Well I got my latest "Ant" flash video downloader plugin version upgrade for my "Mozilla" and it now works on YouTube again. I had to download an ffmpeg.exe file to make it work but it does. "Mozilla" actually has a better one now too and it also works fine with more video format choices. As usual it's just a matter of waiting until the new versions are available and keeping them upgraded.
