New techno-goodies!

Finally scrounged together the funds to replace my wife's aging Dell laptop. She was wanting an i5 processor, dedicated graphics, 6gb RAM, an optical drive, and a 1TB HDD would've been nice. So we had a budget of $750 and went to see what compromises she'd have to make to stay within budget. Turns out not as much as we thought :D. Asus 15.6" Laptop Intel Core i5 Processor 4GB Memory 500GB Hard Drive X550CA-SI50304V - Best Buy.

And since we were thinking about getting another tablet, we went ahead and got with the money we didn't spend on the laptop. I was wanting a nook HD+ because I think it is a better value than a Kindle Fire HD (bigger/better screen, SD card slot), but the store didn't have any. I ended up with this (but in black :D) Asus Google Nexus 7 Tablet 32GB NEXUS7 ASUS-1B32 - Best Buy.

So a new laptop and a new tablet (w/protection plan) w/taxes came to less than the original budget- and the money that was saved paid for lunch at the Golden Corral :D.

I'm gonna be having some laughs at my wife's expense- this will be her first hands-on encounter with Windows 8

Too early to tell how I'm going to like the Nexus, though. Some joker had reset the password on the demo unit and so I was unable to play with it. I bought it based upon the reputation and the 32 gb of storage.

I despised W8 until I had an issue resulting in a call to India for MS tech support. I have to say, it was outstanding and the fellow was giving me instructions while he was working in the background. After that call, W8 interface made a lot more sense.

If you can get your wife to a MS store for some lessons, it would be very beneficial. Save a lot of frustration for her as well.

So this Nexus had Android 4.2 when I took it out of the box yesterday, then upgraded to 4.3 last night before I put it on the charger overnight to give it a full charge (only had 3% out of the box)... and it just informed me that 4.4.2 was ready to be installed. System is completely up to date, but I'm scratching my head why I have redundant apps. I've got an email app/icon and Gmail app/icon, plus I've got one for Currents and one for its replacement, Newsstand...

I am convinced the apps on tablets and smart phones are there only to serve the marketers not the user.

I got a new 10 inch tablet for 2 hundred its the Lenovo s6000f . sure it is slower then the nexus 7 2013 .but it has better battery life a micro sd card slot. I highly recommend it

I initially wanted a 10" because I use larger fonts and the bigger display would've meant less page turning while reading e-books. However, my wife convinced me that a 10" would be uncomfortable to hold after a brief period of time. I can't really complain though- this IPS display is something else.

My vision is bad and I generally can't tell the difference between 720p and 1080p (and 3D is lost on me), but this display appears sharper. Don't know if that is because I can actually see the difference, my brain says it should be because of the specs, or simply because it is a shiny new toy, but it does look better than just about every other LCD screen of any size I've ever owned. Of course, I based this on just watching a few 5FDP, A7X, and Disturbed videos on youtube...

i like my nexus 7 .wheni was to buy a new tablet i wanted a hdx because it has the fastest cpu out now. they didn't have it so they gave me the Lenovo for 2 hundred. I like it because the typing is more easy for me on it

windhchaser 04-06-14 08:11 AM

the nexus is also cool because u get kitkat i only have jellybean on the Lenovo

One drawbackis that this doesn't have a rear camera- I figured it would have at the price point it was originally. No biggie, though. Between NFC, Bluetooth, and Wifi, I'm sure I can find a way to get pictures on it from a camera.

Next priority, though, is to a) figure out if I should put some kind of anti-virus on the Nexus and b) which one (freeware).

windhchaser 04-06-14 08:32 AM

i love a rear camera for barcode apps

windhchaser 04-06-14 08:37 AM

ps i think the cpu on most these devise is overkill just a gimic to make you choose one device over another. i truly think the nexus is the best unit on the market

I have a 2013 Nexus 7 that I've had for over a year now. I'm very happy with it, haven't had any problems.

no1mad 04-06-14 08:56 PM

I've gotten to play with the Nexus for a bit today and I've discovered something that is a little irksome. Somehow, someway, between 4.2 (out of the box) and 4.4, I have lost navigation. I know that this had a Navigation app (because I played with it last night) and that it has (did have?) GPS functionality. What gives?

I've also noticed that while Chrome on Android might look like Chrome on Windows, they aren't the same. Sure, the bookmarks managed to sync up, but I didn't see where my extensions did nor did I see an extensions menu.

RubenX 04-07-14 04:23 AM

I think they are both very good deals. Enjoy.

Would have been even better if my wife had remembered that she had a $100 gift card that she got from the company X-mas party. Oh, well, we went back and used it to get my wife one.

Has it been integrated into the Maps application? Punch in an address, then press the car icon in the lower right (clicking the address may not work). It should then give you the option to start navigation.

Yeah, I think that they did bake it into Maps. Apparently one needs data to even launch it though- I tried to open up Maps to check my location (wanted to see how accurate it was) and it kept telling me I had no network connection.

My wife's new Nexus encountered a bit of a glitch last night. She was wanting to play with the camera, but there was no camera app installed. I grabbed mine, no visible app either, but a Google search brought up the option to take a picture. She tried that and was getting results for either apps from Google Play or directions to local stores where she could buy a camera... weird.

Also, anyone get Voice to work on one of these successfully? Reviews from the Play Store are a mixed bag- and I saw a few that said that it just wouldn't work on tablets.
