Is there still an interest in doing the monthly Foo photo contest?

Submissions have been dropping off lately. If there's still an interest we'll keep the threads going.

I don't have a pic for everything, or have time to get out and take a pic for everything, but I post a pic for those that I do,

it is always unexpected when people actually like your stuff,

I suspect spring will prime the pump so to speak. It was a long winter. I always enjoy the pix.

Maybe we could make it every 2 months instead of every month?

How about 4 per year? A season ending contest. I think they are worthwhile and enjoyable.

I am in when I have something that meets the theme. Those just don't seem to show up often.
I think if it goes for a long period, the thread is likely to slip into the abyss of page three.

We could keep that from happening by combining all of windchaser's threads.

Yeah, I think some of the themes have been harder for people to fit so the posts drop off and, when the posts drop off, they slip off the front page. On the other hand, it's not so fun to keep doing the same themes over and over again (the ones everyone has pictures for), so I don't know what the middle ground is.

I wonder if the original intent in having a theme was a winner could pick it. Personally it doesn’t bother me to not be able to pick a theme if I ever get the most votes. Even though I like the challenge of a theme, I’ve photographed some things I wouldn’t normally have because of the themes, (a creepy Halloween event, the L.A. subway, rubber duckies in my bathtub and photographing with ice skates on ) perhaps just posting one image you’ve taken that month that you like would be better to get more submissions. I do like the sharing of our creativity!!

edit...of course, since I'm interested in what he'd pick, starting after 20grit gets to pick a theme for winning march with tuxbailey

Aprils photo contest has started. Start snapping away everyone.

Just an idea maybe the winners each month could start the contest ?

I like that idea. The winners each month could start and monitor the next contest.

And as clemsongirl mentions, the themes are meant to be challenges.

I post on photography forums, and if some of you think that the themes here are too hard, don't plan on posting on a photography forum! The themes here are easy compared with the photography challenges on those forums.

Recent themes on one photography site have been ... conceptual photography, monochrome, books, reflections, abstract, city lights, DIY soft focus filter, backlit, home, new beginnings, beaches, water, angles, seasons ...

My impression was that this photography challenge was supposed to be like that ... a challenge. Not a matter of rummaging through our collections of existing photos and picking out something that'll do, that's close enough, and if we don't have anything like that in our collection we don't post ... but rather an opportunity to use our photography skills to try something new, to experiment, to learn something about our cameras, perhaps even to become better photographers ...

We've got a whole month here to take a photo that meets the theme, and we can post photos from prior to that month if we want ... on the site I mentioned above, participants have 2 weeks, and the photo has to be taken within those 2 weeks, complete with EXIF data. In many cases it is a challenge to acquire all the props and whatever else is needed to get the photo, or to get out on location, in that time period. But that's half the fun!

Since I'm a cyclist too ... I'll often combine a ride with getting out on location to take a shot for the contest. It's a great way to add a goal to a ride.

If we change this to every second month or the end of every quarter, I think it'll die. I'd rather leave it as it is, once a month, or maybe even change to a weekly or an every second week contest. Sometimes I think the lengthy deadline means that people forget about it.

Further to what I've written above, perhaps we could run the contests on a 3 week basis.

Contest starts May 1.
Contest ends May 22.
Person monitoring the contest announces that it has closed, and voting has commenced late on May 22 or early on May 23.
Voting goes on for 4 days to the end of May 26.
Winner has a few days to think of a theme and start the next contest on June 1.

Perhaps a brisker pace might keep the interest.

Lately it seems to have been very draggy ... April's contest was finally posted on April 8, getting on for halfway through the month.

I agree with skijor that spring will likely get peoples' juices going again. People who take photographs have particular interests like everyone else. While we are often prepared to rise to a challenge I'm always more motivated and feel I can do better when a theme is not too far from my main areas of interest, so I'm not necessarily going to post every time.

Three weeks or a month is fine - I agree that interest would go down quickly if it is extended longer than that. But do let's keep the contests going!

I'll add a sweetener for the May Contest. We'll need a first, second, and third place for it. I'll award a free Ti for the top 3 submissions. In addition, the same deal will occur every quarter. So, every 3 months, there will be a prize set for that photo contest.

After that, the June contest will have prizes as well to get it on a fiscal schedule, and then September, Dec March and June.....

For the prize contests, previous lifetime Ti winners and staff are not eligible, to reserve it for the members who would specifically benefit from it.

Like others have said, some of the categories are hard to fit. I enjoy the contests and submit my stuff whenever I have something that applies.

Do Foosters still want to vote for the photos each month or should we choose a panel of judges to pick the winner?

I think foosters should vote - a panel of judges would take out or compromise some of our potential posters. And I don't think we should be able to vote for our own photos (no names mentioned...)

+1.
Sometimes I feel like a ranking of the votes would be good (sometimes I feel one or two is significantly better and will only list one or two names instead of all 3) like first place is worth 5 points, second 3 and third 1 or something, but that makes it a lot harder to evaluate. Definitely like having foosters vote as I like looking at other people's pictures even if I don't have one to add, and have always been taught that one shouldn't vote for oneself in anything save a political election. Not really sure why, but that's just the way I was raised and doing otherwise makes me feel a bit squicky.

Guideline Suggestions

1. Voting For Yourself – in some contests on some photography forums, you are welcome to vote for yourself; but in other contests they request that you do not vote for yourself. I think we need to make it clear whether we are allowed to vote for ourselves or not in this instance.

2. Number of Votes – in some contests on some photography forums, they request that you PM the contest organiser One (1) vote for your top selection; but in other contests they request that you PM the contest organiser your top Three (3) votes; and some indicate that the votes will be weighted. (So you indicate your top choice, second choice, and third choice in that order. Then they do something like assign 3 to the to every top choice, 2 to every second choice, and 1 to every third choice and multiply it out to come up with first, second, and third place.). I think it would be good if we could pick one method.

3. Privacy – this is the only forum where votes are public. On photography forums, your votes are private. Votes are PM’d to the contest organiser who tallies them up and announces a winner. That might be something we consider doing.

4. Comments on the Photos – most photography sites request that comments on the photos wait until after the contest has closed. I wouldn't mind seeing a bit of a discussion about the photos after the contest closes.

5. Voting Content – one photography site indicates the following regarding selecting the winning photos (it’s a judged site, not a voting site) “Entries are judged by a combination of factors including, but not limited to, composition, exposure, interest, originality, and if the entry followed the assignment.” We could include something like that as a reminder when it comes time to vote. One contest, on another forum, requested that we include a comment as to why we liked the one photo we were voting for, and when they announced the winner they included the comments (anonymously) for the winning photo. That only went on for a few months and then they dropped the comment part, but I thought it was a good idea because it gave us all some idea what people like.

Regarding going with a panel of judges, as I mentioned above, one photography site I post on is a judged site, and for the most part that’s fine. But there can be an undercurrent of discontent with that method … especially when the judges chose a completely unexpected photo for the win for a particular contest.

And another idea …
On one photography forum (which uses a forum set up very similar to ours … the look and feel is almost identical), they have a certain group of contests set up so they are all automatic. As soon as there are 10 submissions, it goes to a vote. Voting is done through a check-box poll so people can select one or more. And on a certain date the poll closes and a winner is announced. Because their forum is so similar to ours, that might be something we could look into.

Incidentally, as an aside, that forum also offers users the capability to “like” posts. If they can do that … can we?

The "Like"button functon interfered with our version of the forum software and created a conflict too often, locking up browsers, so we have it disabled to prevent issues.

I'd say nop voting for yourself, on the pics. Also, if the submission comes from a member who has already won the Titanium in a previous contest, remember, the won Ti memberships are forever memberships. They don't expire. So..................do we DQ previous winners, or do we have a vote on who to gift it to?

Given that there are only about a dozen of us who post photos ... once we've all got Titanium memberships, then what?

Also, there would be absolutely no point for me (and a few others) to post photos here anymore if we're going to be disqualified immediately because we have Titanium memberships.

But ... if someone with a Titanium membership wins a Titanium membership in these photos contests, I'd say that person can give it to whoever they want.

And I'm OK with the guideline of not voting for ourselves ... it just needs to be officially stated in a short list of guidelines because, as I said, some photography contests allow it and some don't.
