My dog "Merckx" below. (I don't have a cat, but there is a stray I've been feeding at work for 5 or 6 years).

Let's see, cats poop in the house and cover it in the litter box using their paws. They then jump up on counters where you prepare food. Dog, if trained properly don't do any of that. Oh, yeah you can train a cat not to do something when you're in the room with them, but once you leave... well, that another story. I like cats. I just wish they were more like dogs.

We have one cat, Daisy. She runs our lives. But I would love a dog and she's a pretty laid back cat and wouldn't mind bossing a dog around too.

Dogs: you have to follow them around wearing a bag inside-out and pick up their poop. They have a tendency to eat poop and dog lovers love it when they get doggy kisses via dogs licking their face with the same mouth that ate poop. Have a tendency to maul toddlers and some adults.

Cats: poop where you want them to, don't eat poop, don't lick you with poopy tongues. Aside from stealing the souls of infants, generally don't maul people.

We have two cats.

I would have never guessed. FWIW, my dogs never lick my face, and I have this vague memory of carrying poop filled diapers for my kids until they could be disposed of properly. I, did however, keep both of the kids. Oh, and I still have scars from a freind's house cat attacking me as a walked next to a set of stairs. She jumped onto my back and started acting like a paper shredder. But then again I have a scar on my chin from being attacked by a parrot. To each his own.

Dog. West highland white terrier. Cute but a doofus. First dog was a German Shepard. Smarter than most people. We also have a cat which is an annoying fur ball.

I get kisses from my dogs and my cats wander around on the counters. Don't even care.

Kids are still more annoying.

Any questions?

Dogs can go very fast for comparatively shorter distances and climb like a sherpa, but are damned uncomfortable in the buttockular area...and cats are forever comfortable, but get no respect?

Dogs provide unconditional love, cats at best, range between ambiguity and hatred. My dogs don't eat crap and do lick your face. Oh the humanity!

I'd actually love to have dogs again, but I don't have much in the way of land, and my favorite breed will always be German Shepherds.

Big dogs = big yard. Lots of training too, but you can't beat the kind of security two big Shepherds can provide...

Someday...When the kid is done with college and I can move to greener pasture.
Let me use your Big Dogs need big yards to
PLUG GREYHOUNDS
Greyhounds are biggish dogs
Females come from the track at 50 lbs but in short order eat their way to 70 lbs
Males arrive at 60lbs and usually weight 75-85 lbs in short order

But Greyhounds LIVE SMALL- need no more than an apartment(with some goodwill sourced bedding material on the floor-or some are fond of futons or beds, but we draw the line at sleeping with a 70 lb bad breath mutt)

And they DON'T need lots of exercise or a big yard.
Granted they look Extremely athletic-like Gigantic Jack Russells ,but they are not big on un-necessary exercise
Yeah a few walks-normal lengths- is about it.
They are LOW ENERGY couch potatoes-forget running for fun-they will occasionally at the dog park,
but they don't get carried away with it

Adopt a greyhound- a small apartment is just fine for them-
1)They are hearty-none of the genetic problems of other big breeds-rarely ill other than delicate somewhat sensitive skin
2)NO DOGGY ODOR!! Yeah-hard to believe, but they only smell doggy immediately after running, or when they are wet-your house won't "smell like dog"
3)Not much shedding
4) Rarely rarely bite a human-and maybe 1/2 are cat safe-probably bite fewer humans than any other breed-human aggression seems to have been bred out of them-so
5)Much more handsome/beautiful than the neighbor's dog-no matter the breed-greyhounds are more "attractive"-yes this is shallow of me-but thought I would mention it

So adopt a greyhound- one up your neighbor-sorta like Putin vs GB2 !!

PS They are great car travelers

Neither /nor , was easier to find apartments , then move out of them and go on bike tours that way .
