need help figuring out a simple music recording system

I have no idea where to post this on the internet so heck, I frequent bike forums so I will try it here.

I play the native american style flute and anasazi flute. Right now, I have a Roland micro cube amp with delay and reverb, and a cheap mike. I can fill a small room with half decent sound. What I want to do is record myself so I can have a rhythm track, play one part on one flute and another part on another flute, inotherwords, play with myself. I would like to be able to record at least four tracks. I want to be able to save the recording and use the recording for practice as well as for back up when performing. I also would like to be able to record and play loops on the fly, when performing.

What would be a simple way to do this? Cost isn't an issue, ease of use is my primary concern. I search the internet and get info on mixers, on looper pedals and on computer mixing software and I am totally lost. I never have done any recording so I get lost in terminology. I also found no site which simply explains one's options for home recording.

I use Audacity for my studio. That is I record it with a good cardioid condenser mic onto a Korg 8 track digital recorder. I then download it into my PC and use Audacity to mix. You need a good mic and place it above the edge or fipple. If your sound is too windy, move the mic out.

Yeah, I know I need a better mike, I usually use someone else's.

The Korg looks ok, but it looks like it doesn't do loops or at least not easily, on the fly. That means I would also need a looping pedal. Which adds to the complexity.
Both you and Tom recommend AudaCity. It is free so I'll download it and take a look.

I still wish this all was simpler.

The Korg is a little complicated. I think it will loop but I have never needed it so I never learned how. If I am layering tracks I will record on one track, rewind, monitor 1 and record 2, rewind, monitor 1or 2 and record 3, etc. (monitor on headphones.) What I have at this point is n mono tracks that I can mix down to 2 stereo tracks or export all tracks over to audacity to do it. The good thing about the Korg is that unlike a computer running Pro-tools, there is no latency.

Protip: If you want your sound to be full and loud enough, but can't seem to get the windy noise out of your mic, cover the microphone head with a non-lubricated condom (not a joke). This mainly only works for rounded microphone heads like the Shure SM-58, but it's great for allowing the sound without the wind noise. Source: Had to help mic an outdoor orchestral performance on a windy day.

Keeping the idea of simple, anyone use the Jamman looper pedals? It looks like the xt versions will not only do loops on the fly but will allow recording of songs up to 10 minutes long. The question is the quality of sound when putting down tracks by overdubbing. But, you can't beat ease of use.

Wulf, so there are still latency problems with computer recording software?

If I went to a computer based system, maybe using an iPad, what hardware does one need? Some kind of external soundcard and preamp? What would they be?

Sorry, there are no simple explanations for the entire process...you have to start by taking baby steps... like where is the on button

Yeah, I understand that. But what I can't seem to find is a roadmap which shows what I even need to get started.

OK for all the uses you describe I suggest you check out the Boss RC-30

it has a mic input (with phantom power if you want to use a condenser mic live)

you can import /export audio files from, and to your computer

    you can add effects

you can add rhythm tracks to play along with or to support your loops

    here

    http://cms.rolandus.com/assets/media...ning_Guide.pdf

    is a quick start guide

you will of course also need a small high quality amp

    good luck

Thanks. I might go the pedal route. Or, wait until I am in Mpls and see some pros.
