What do you think about when you ride alone...

I often ride alone, on rural roads with little or no traffic. Not having to pay attention to traffic, or chatty companions, my mind often starts to drift to other subjects besides the task at hand.

I sometimes even engage in internal dialogues about all kinds of subjects.

I find that this is a good way, for me at least, to compensate for the loneliness of long solo rides. It is also a great way to sort out problems or issues facing me at the moment.

Of course, once traffic picks up my mind focus back on the road ahead.

What do you think about when you ride by yourself?

Do you have internal dialogues?

About what?

Just curious.

Thanks.

EVERYHING!!! I love riding alone just left to my thoughts - its when I solve the "world's" problems. If I didn't ride I would go crazy... although sometimes I think of nothing at all... just listening to (and feeling) my feet whirl on the pedals... that's my "zen" moment...

I fall down inside myself until the world simplifies to patterns around me and breathing, which is literally a zen state. I'm not thinking, I'm simply experiencing utter tranquility and simplicity of my body in motion. I fall down into that meditative state and can stay there for a Century( of miles!).

Actually I have difficulty with the concept of "thought" per se.

The fact that I am still alive and typing this points to spontaneous 'correct' decisions made at a moments notice. Was that 'thought'?

I have, in my mind, puzzled out physical problems - with out touching any 'thing' and eventually successfully implemented the solution. A lot of the time these solutions will wake me in the small hours of the night from a dream.

I rode a very regular, but varied route, years ago when I had a stressful job and at night when I couldn't sleep I would mentally trace my bike route in my mind.

This allowed me to enter sleep and profit from the relaxation plus the insight into my work problems.

LOL, next time I'm on the bike my destination is the ice cream stand. Not to get ice cream as it is not open yet but just to learn the deep country roads way behind my house and to try and get away from dirt roads so I can pedal on the downhills rather than brake on the downhills.

I don't think of anything. I'm in the middle of nowhere so I'm nature watching. For most of the roads I'm on there is nothing manmade to see but plenty of deer and other wildlife to see.

Internal dialogues are great for irrational rants. If there's still an issue at the end of the ride it can then be dealt with constructively. Mostly, I just like observing day to day changes in the environment along my route. Often I stop percieving time. Once I counted cigarette butts. Sadly the greatest density was at the middle school bus stop.

I was wondering when you were going to make an appearance.

See, thinking about space and robots is the reason why you almost hit that car. Next time concentrate on the road.

I think about lots of stuff, but mostly I'm just in the moment. That is really the best place to be. It matters not if I'm riding or walking the dog. Each one is different. For me at least.

What do you think about?

Politics, friends, past conversations with those friends. And if on tour, miles from the nearest person, I will actually break out in song. Riding is such a kick.

Yes, like how a box of newly opened crayons can bring back memories of elementary school.

On my rides I often ride past orange groves and strawberry fields. The sweetness in the air is intoxicating.

I've heard it said that men think about sex when riding a bike, and women think about riding their bike during sex.
