Uh...2k was 14 years ago.

And I'll happily argue that today's rock -- at least the stuff getting widespread exposure -- isn't as good as the stuff being made 14 years ago!

But I'll toss this out there as something fairly recent that's fairly non-sucky:

This song is brand new and breaking as is the band. The Last Internationale are very political in a Pete Seger / Woody Guthrie kind of way. They're kind of anti-everything, but you can't argue with the unjustice done to Native American Indians.

In fairness, we've had some time to break up the decades into reasonably distinctive styles. Haven't really had enough time to determine if 2000-2010 was appreciably different from now.

Sex

Drugs

R & R

No Redeeming Social Values in any of these, but these are great songs musically and pushing buttons has always been a big part of rock.

We've had an empty nest well before 2K, so my modern rock song list is practically nil, but this one really caught my attention when it came out and barely makes it under the wire.

I really liked this song when it first air, but with my early PC being agonizingly slow, coupled to a dial up connection, and no You Tube at the time, made for watching videos like this nearly impossible until several years later.

+1 on Coldplay. Like Death Cab they consistently turn out good music and are true musicians.

This song is about relationship violence, but wasn't controversial like Smack Your ***** Up because they don't seem to endorse it...I'm kind of crossing music threads here

^I saw Red Jumpsuit in a show a few years ago. Their live show just doesn't live up to their best songs...

THese guys were in the same venue, high energy, good entertainers....

In working alongside with a couple of Millennials at my work place, one would think that I would be better abreast of even more modern music, but one alternates between numerous forms of music, and the other is deep into retro, and both surprising even me on their knowledge of older songs and artists.

There's a lot of great modern music out there (and plenty of bad as well). Here's one of my favorites:

I'd like to introduce y'all to my better half. We've been riding together for nearly 25 years. Look out- when she gets her teeth sunk into a theme, she's hard to shake loose.

(Tip: the "film" icon at the top allows you to post YouTube URLs and have them show up with a preview. Pretty ingenious, these software jockeys.)

And here's one I played for my wife. It made her hug me and cry.

(Don't tell her I found it on a beer commercial.)

It probably is not the best song out there, but it sure got a ton of airplay on the cruise ship the wife and I were on a few years back.
