I voted A earlier, but I really hate, hate, hate moving, so I'm not sure that's what I would have done (what I did do was keep renting). Take your feelings about moving into account.

I've rented 11 different homes and bought 2 over a the last 30 years. Renting because I was only in a place 2-3 years and bought houses once I thought I wouldn't be moving again. I've been in my current home for 14 years and it is paid off because I really don't plan on moving again.

The bigger the house, the bigger the price tag on upkeep, maintenance, insurance. If you don't want to pay someone to do the maintenance, you have to spend your time. And there is always something needing work...the yard, appliances, painting, etc. (And things you don't give a rip about will become important to your significant other which will take a lot more money and time but that is a whole different thread for the future.)

So, I'd go with A. Save your money and time which translates to freedom vs anchor yourself to a house. You'll have opportunity for that later.

We've done A, B & C. I hated B; the only rationale to buy one of these is to watch the market like a hawk and sell when you think the invest/time/sell graphs are best aligned, then buy a house you really want to live in. I lasted 2 years in that new house, made a nice profit and moved on. I notice now my B house is FMV at $1mil more than I paid for it, but I would have hated every day I lived in it, paid the crazy utilities and property taxes, HOA dues, dealt with the neighbors & their brat kids.

After 5 houses we are renters now. No complaints.

Never moved :) when I got this job, my parents convinced me to stay home until I could afford to buy a house and I went to college (the little bit that I did) in my hometown. I do not think I'd enjoy moving.

A really seems like the way to go. My best friend bought one similar to what I'm thinking about and he just finished it, it's beautiful inside and has no shortage of space. I can even put a gym in the basement (concrete floors, I can drop whatever weight I feel like :D) and convert a bedroom into a music room.

This is the thing. Despite being one, I really dislike yuppies and their stupid kids. :lol: I also dislike clutter and if I buy something where I can ignore entire rooms I'm going to fill it up with crap.

The person I got this house from opened up what must have been jail cell sized 3 bedrooms ,

and found it lesser valued because it now had just one.

my 2 cents, I stayed in my 1st home way longer than I ever expected ... still there in fact, 23 years later!

I did not know that. I thought a "bungalow" was just a single story house. The "standard template" here seems to be 2 small bedrooms and a decent sized master. I'll probably keep one as a spare room and convert one to an office or fill it up with guitars.

Im a fan of homeostasis, so if nothing forces me out I can see myself doing that.
