The old lady started buying 2% milk...hooray!!!

For some reason my wife started buying 2% milk instead of skim. I must have died and gone to heaven. Over the last few days our family has consumed a gallon per day.

Regular milk is only 4% fat. Like in who's book is 4% fat high fat anyway?

And yes, animal fats are just fine. Even good. 4% fat milk is LOW fat in my book.

Same here. Even 1% (what I usually get) has far more flavor. Most of my family still drinks that white sadness.

All what you know... I can't drink anything but skimmed milk... everything else to me is so rich and "chunky"... I use 1% like others use cream...

I didn't realize the trivial difference until I recently read the excellent book "Salt Sugar Fat" by Michael Moss.

For most of my formative years, we drank 2%.
Then we moved to a farm and our landlord (the farmer) sold us whole milk straight from the cow (it sometimes had to be strained to remove straw/hay). It took a bit of adjustment, but we learned to like it.
Then we moved and went back to 2%. It was really thin, but again, we got used to it.
When I went to college, all they had was whole milk, and I couldn't get used to it, so I quit drinking milk completely.

Reading these responses, I never realized what a hedonistic indulgence it is when I drink whole milk. I think maybe I'll celebrate the madness with a bowl of cornflakes with half & half, plus a coffee with with heavy cream.

I've always been a 2% person.. skim is disgusting white water as said above, 1% is okay, 2% seems perfect for cereal and stuff, whole is delicious but it's so thick you're thirsty after drinking it.. but I'm leaning more and more towards whole lately..

I thought whole is only 3.25%? Skim or 1%, hell no. I can stomach 2% but why would I .

I used to be the same way. I think when my dad and stepmom got married, she was a 2%er and we were skim, so we switched to 2%... But it took awhile of putting it into cereal and then switching back to realize I was missing out on some flavor. A nice gold glass of skim is still nice and refreshing sometimes.

I had a friend whose obese little brother drank heavy creamer as milk. First time I saw him do it I thought he was playing a joke and took a big chug of his glass... Almost vomited.

REAL milk, straight out of a cow probably is higher in fat than 4%. All milk, sold as milk has had some cream skimmed off the top and sold separately as cream. There is some leeway for deciding what the fat content of whole milk is. I used to buy REAL milk, straight out of a cow from a farmer but he did take some cream off the top with a centrifuge machine for cream. The settings on his centrifuge machine varied.

I often use "full cream" powdered milk and can adjust the milk content to suit my taste at any particular time... which more often than not is high.

You people don't know how good you have it. I grew up on powdered milk in the 70's. I didn't know what real milk was till I left home.

I'm glad I MOOOOOVED out or I would have gotten rickets.
