Anyone have experience with satellite based Internet?

Long story short, we are exploring the idea of moving again, but my wife insists that she'll only consider moving out to the country- and there is no DSL or cable where we are currently considering (her father has 10 acres and we are fairly sure we could get a piece of that dirt cheap).

I recall the horror stories of satellite based services back in the day of disruptions happening on a fairly consistent basis due to clouds, stiff breeze/high wind, storms, or even a passing flock of birds. Just wondering if technology has gotten to the point where disruptions are the exception and not the norm.

I think top speeds are about 1/2 what you get with a basic DSL package.
I'd double check where you move to....I think high speed has covered a lot of area it didn't 10 yrs ago.

I had the original Direcway PC and then Hughsnet. Both sorry to say were expensive and SUCKED. That said at the time where I was living it was the only game in town other than dial up. So if you find yourself in the same situation you will probably do the same. Just know it is FAR from even the worse basic DSL service and a much larger cost. My better half didn't really like the dish either. At the time I was living in the Maine woods and even had to buy a heater for the dish or climb up on the roof and clear the snow off after each storm.... and ice.... Moved to FL and solved a lot of $$ problems at once. Good luck.

I live outside cable range and have a wireless ISP. That option might be a player.

My folks looked into it a couple years back and went with a cellular wifi hotspot instead. They don't know anything about technology (and don't own cell phones), so it took 2-3 different companies to find one that got reception at their house, but it works for them well enough for us to have (somewhat laggy) skype conversations between them and their granddaughter.
