but maybe, just maybe the all-time fave cover is the cowboy junkies version of the velvet underground's "sweet jane." just magical and transcendent.

Yep -- Awesome cover. Along the same lines of someone nailing a cover: Jimi Hendrix version of Dylan's All Along the Watchtower. Whoo!

Always a fan of Devo's version of Working in a Coalmine, but I do wonder if it has more to do with an unhealthy teen fascination with the movie, Heavy Metal...

Revolting Cocks do sleazy Rod Stuart:

Someone posted a Black Sabbath cover? Someone mentioned Trent Reznor?

Cyndi Lauper does some amazing covers and has also been covered rather extensively... she does not get nearly enough credit for being one of the best singers on the planet.

Ok I admit it, I didn't realize this was a [Foundations] cover. Her voice still gives me goosebumps.

Some really good songs today !! You guys know the sad story behind The Verve’s "Bitter Sweet Symphony"? The title of the song is especially apt and the full story doesn’t reflect well on The Rolling Stones and their management. Basically a 1 hit wonder band is seeing no money or credit from their only hit because the song uses a sample from a symphonic recording of the Rolling Stones' song The Last Time, which was authorized ahead of time. Though the lyrics and melody were completely original to the Verve, Bittersweet Symphony is credited to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards alone. The covers thread seems to be the best fit for this.

See this wiki link for the full story: Bitter Sweet Symphony - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is what I was trying to say about covers. Takes the original material and OWNS it.
