The title of the song is especially apt and the full story doesn’t reflect well on The Rolling Stones and their management. Basically a 1 hit wonder band is seeing no money or credit from their only hit because the song uses a sample from a symphonic recording of the Rolling Stones' song The Last Time, which was authorized ahead of time. Though the lyrics and melody were completely original to the Verve, Bittersweet Symphony is credited to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards alone. The covers thread seems to be the best fit for this.

See this wiki link for the full story: Bitter Sweet Symphony - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

any potential copyright infringement involving the rolling stones catalogue before the stones started their own label in 1971 was certain to exhume
allen klein and or andrew loog oldham (2 of the greatest moneygrubbers of the 20th century). the verve's mistake was choosing/co-opting a song before
1971 from the stones whom were victimized by both klein and oldham-hence their own label. i have the feeling
the whole thing was out of mick and keith's hands and even if they both said "take all the royalties," it wasn't legally their call.

More than 50 artists have covered this old song written in the 40's. Here's a cool synthy version from Debbie Harry with lots of photos - I wonder what she had to say about the death of the last Ramone - they came along in the same era in the same city

A little spin on cover songs - George Thorogood covered this, but how many have heard the original by John Lee Hooker?:

The Beatle's original of this sounds kind of 'mechanical'. Joe Cocker took it and brought it to life, putting some real feeling into it. Dang, this is good stuff:

George Thorogood had lots of covers - including Move it on Over by Hank Williams and this one from Bo Didley. I think Bad To The Bone might be his only original hit.

I didn't know Instanbul wasn't a TMB Giants original. It's quirky enough to be theirs.
