    Drug Songs

We all know sex & drugs are forever associated with R&R. While probably 70% of rock music falls under sex (relationships, lust, etc.) there are some great songs that are about drugs. Post your favorite drug songs

Starting at the top of the drug hierarchy we have to lead off with what’s been called the junkie national anthem, the Velvet’s Heroin. Lou Reed was a fan of my favorite band Metric, and did a song with them on their last album. Empty is the song that hooked me on this band. While "Heroin" is literal, Empty is so subtle. Like Heroin, it has a RUSH built into the song and tempo transitions. Lou’s live recording (R&R Animal) has a more pronounced rush than the studio version, but I wanted a lyric comparison of the 2 songs, so I’ve cc’s the Empty lyrics below:

There's no way out, the only way out is to give in
When there's no way out, the only way out is to give in
    How I love to
    How I love to
How I love to give in
Here no one sleeps, one lays up while the other lies down
Where no one sleeps, one lays up while the other lies down
Ask the line on your face what the line on your hand meant
We, we couldn't see what was coming
    Shake your head, it's empty
Shake your hips move your feet
    Shake your head, it's empty
Shake your hips move your feet
    Shake your head, it's empty
Shake your hips move your feet
    Shake your head, it's empty
Shake your hips move your feet
I'm so glad that I'm an island
I'm so glad that I'm an island
I'm so glad that I'm an island now
    Sickness was fixing me some
Coughed out my heart in the last stall
Now that the damage is done
I never miss it at all

You can further the brotherhood of man by eliminating class.
You can lift the wage earner up by equalizing earnings.
You can bring about prosperity by overturning the holders of power.
You can strengthen the weak by eating the the strong.
You can help the poor by destroying the rich.

    Johnny Cash's version of Hurt

The Pusher by Steppenwolf probably ties with White Rabbit as the best drug related song ever

"The world is a dangerous place to live, not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it."

"He said he wants heaven but praying is to slow
he bought himself a ticket on an airline made of snow"
Snowblind Friend written by Hoyt Axton-depressing dead on street doper song-
nothing "cool" no bragging just grief too late song

The Pusher- Steppenwolf maybe just as above poster said
"Lotta people walking 'round with tombstones in their eyes"

I liked White Rabbit but Grace Slick-great voice-was so rude on some interview show
    I just can't like her-
not by comparison to Janis Joplin who was nice likable decent
    not a diva acting jerk
    Great song of course

Hotel CA not bad-but not in the same class as The Pusher or White Rabbit or the other one-
" He said he wanted heaven....airline made of snow"not sure who wrote that one

The Pusher-all time best dope song

Here's Lou Reed's live version of Heroin with a great backing band, not the Velvet Underground. I think I remember hearing they were Alice Cooper's band on loan for Lou's solo tour. A great keyboard rush as promised. Pretty good for '73
