I think he was probably ashamed of not being able to conquer his addiction and couldn't go on making jokes about it anymore. I think it was his way of saying it's not really a joking matter for people struggling with it.....His last statement.

there is no universal comic or actor for everyone but robin came close. i think we all came across some role/show/standup/appearance/cameo that he did
that made us smile, laugh, shed a tear or take notice. never came across another comedian that could relate or improv a string of jokes/consciousness
and shift gears up and down as effortlessly as he.
