Arkansas Obamacare question

I'm *NOT* discussing politics... please keep the politics where they belong in P&R. Even if this thread gets transferred there (where I could probably get better answers)... please don't rabble rabble the politics, I just need some info...

So I got this letter which, to my understanding, means that there are some meetings somewhere, where I have the right to go whine/rant about stuff... but instead, If I sign this, I can authorize another entity to go whine/rant in my place... right?

Is this a required thing? Do I *HAVE TO* sign this document?

If it's optional, what are the pros/cons of this?

This has nothing to do with the Affordable Care Act, per se, but rather the insurance carrier who has you covered. Blue Cross Blue Shield licensees operate differently across the country, with some being part of for-profit companies and others being non-profits. Arkansas' is a non-profit, so all members essentially have voting rights, just as if you were a shareholder of a public company.

That letter is advising you of your right to go to the annual meeting and cast your own vote on the issues to be discussed or sign a paper that essentially delegates a proxy to vote on your behalf as you wish. You don't have to cast your vote as the board is advising. These are legally required to be mailed. In addition, certain actions require a specific percentage of the total membership (or shareholders, in the case of a public company) cast votes for the tally to be binding.

You aren't required to do anything, although they may contact you if you don't vote asking you to do so for the aforementioned reason. I usually always try to cast proxy votes for all our investments, but reading through the stuff can be time consuming.

Not enough information.

Are you covered by BC/BS?

And no even if you are, no.

But what does this have to do with the ACA?

Please drop the Obamacare if you don't want it to become political.

This has nothing to do with the ACA.

Oh, BTW, nobody cool refers to it by "Obamacare" anymore.

It's the ACA.

I am not a lawyer, but it looks like...

Well, this appears to be a proxy statement for Blue Cross/Blue Shield. If you sign it, you give the Board of Directors thumbs up for whatever they decide to do, unless you notify them otherwise as directed in that notice, or attend the annual meeting in person.

Looks like a notice allowing you to resign your representation at the board meeting to the board's chosen rep is all.

I am going to agree with the others who said that looks like pretty standard stockholder proxy voting sort of verbiage.
