No joke- the Pope is dead?

I guess no one can confirm it, but they've closed the doors to St. Peter's Basilica and the cardinals are arriving in Roma today from all over the world:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/4402323.stm

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=stor..._re_eu/pope_51

Yahoo news actually posted that the pope was dead. Then about 45 minutes later, they revised it to the above link with a totally different story.

Anyone in Italy have a news report they can translate?

I'm not religious, but I said a prayer.

Koffee

I know it sounds like 'conspiracy theory talk',
but I'm pretty sure that the News Orgs have had the broadcast and web graphics for his death prepared for months.
Looks like AOL was a little early out of the gate...

oh, yeah, undoubtably. they probably only need to update the exact time of death and maybe cut and paste a quote from an offical and it's ready to roll.

No offense meant, but I'm really surprised he's made it this long. I always wince when I see him on TV nowadays.

This does not in any way reflect upon the character of the Pope...But, I for one have all but given up on US media..Their sensationalism totally disgusts me...Gossipy crime stories, car chases..Nothing newsy...I watch virtually no Media news..
Until I get my daily email news bulletin from the "British Independent" I am pretty much w/o a news source..Unless ,maybe headlines on Yahoo...My tv stays off during the early nightime hours.
Yesterday, they were treating the Pope's possible demise like other soapy news stories...'Is he or isn't he..'?

you might want to listen to NPR and watch shows like 'now', 'frontline', 'religion and ethics', etc... those are by far the most objective news stories i've seen yet. the networks can go to hell as far as i'm concerned - they just feed off the masses. can't expect much from them.

Timmhaan..Listen to the BBC/CBC...NPR is now under a lot of restrains not to cover certain stories...Americans never know how controlled their news is unless you get foreign outlets on their satellite system or stream onto the BBC or German TV has a good English broadcast...Yeah, NPR is the best we have, but try comparing them to even the Noon CBC news . don't know unless you try..

I get most of my current events news off the web(which can be very untrustworthy, I know) and I find that much more tolerable than watching the TV media ham it up for the cameras. They take reality and try to turn it into a reality show-even before there were reality shows.

TV news time every night I'm either sleeping(I work nights) or watching Food Network or The Discovery Channel or some program that I might actually learn something from.

That's nice that you said a prayer, Koffee, but shouldn't he be good? I mean, if anybody's ready to go, shouldn't it be him? Just an observation.

agreed. i do listen to the bbc most mornings when i have time. i also enjoy going to unlikely foreign countries just to get another perpective. for example, once in a while i read the NZ hearld, some english language Japanese newspapers, and stuff like that. i figure the more angles you read the better.

I recall when I climbed Mt. Ventoux..( the easiest approach from the east.) 2/3 way up to top, there is a little restaurant...many stop to take in some quick energy ...
But, I ran into some Norwegian cyclists..Started talking because they 1. knew english well...2. one was riding a spiffy , new Scott carbon frame bike, presently marketed in Europe..(so we compared their new Scott with my beat up internationally traveled steed - Scott..)
but, soon into conversation, we started talking about what is going on in the world...They claimed to be knowledgeable about US news sources...they asked me what I read and listened too...
They pittied Americans for our news sources...and understood our dilema and excused us...real conversation...Guess, they compare our news sources with their's because they have access to ours...
then I resumed climbing the final 6 miles or so...and topped off the ride atop the Mtn. with locally popular lavender ice cream...a real life event...Standing up their next to the Simpson monument and sacrificing my "Performance" water bottle..sorry,best I could do...
a real achievement..sort of like dipping your front wheel into an opposite ocean, 3000 miles from home...

Many people are glad to see the pope go, after his (mis)handling of the sex abuse by catholic priests on children in many boston area churches...
