    Cash Register Charities

Some businesses wait until after I pay to ask if I want to donate to some charity, before I get change back. That seems to be shady business. I never went back to the first business that did that to me, but the second business is harder to avoid. I've read about it becoming a more common practice.

Safeway has been doing that for years.

During a card sale the other day the POS at one of their locations prompted me for donations to two different charities prior to finalization.

I'm not as turned off by it as you, but always decline.

SOP in my area, I find it ironic these are usually stores that milk me pretty good on prices.. then they want what little change I've got coming back to go to the charities they "support". I think it'd be better form on their part to match the change you get back, but hey.. it's all about profits and appearing charitable at the same time as far as I can tell.

So does Safeway get a tax deduction when they turn over my contributions? Actually the contribution request is automated now, you just choose a button ('charity a', 'charity b', 'charity c', or 'i am a hateful excuse for a human') as part of the checking out process.

From time to time In-n-Out Burger ahs a charity drive. I'm pretty sure the last time they matched at 3-1. They put in 3 for each one from customers.

Little surprise, this works. The combination of not always and matching makes it feel a whole lot different.

    ha!

it's a wonderful little guilt trip, isn't it.

i don't think they can deduct your contributions from their earnings. that would be some kind of enron cooking.

I'd think the clerks must love this innovation as it would be awful to have to ask people all day long.

Victims of circumstance, we 'adopted' a feral cat colony that came to live on our property. Monthly food costs run about $300. I sort of chuckle when the Petsmart card reader asks me if I want to help homeless pets today.

A penny here a penny there, the phone and electric company knows that pretty soon we are talking about real money.

Let's for moment leave cable out of the mix, OK?

Matching I could dig if the charities mesh with me! Often they do, so don't misunderstand.

I only do charities after research. If I'm giving to charity and the CEO is making $500,000/year, they don't need any of my pathetic salary.

Worse than the charities is stopping for gas in the car and paying at the pump. Swipe the card. Wait a moment. "Would you like a car wash?" No. Wait a moment. "Would you like a sandwich?" No. Wait a moment. "Would you like a Pepsi?" No, I just want gas. Wait a moment. "Would you like to try something from our new donut selection?" No, all I want to do is get gas! Wait a moment.... over and over again and finally, "Select Grade" and I get to pump my gas. If I wanted any of that other stuff, I'd come into the freakin store!

I give my spare change to the homeless people outside the store but I first I make them swear they'll only use the money for drugs or alcohol.
