1972 Mustang Mach I - don't care if it was pea green with a pea green interior --- I loved it. Actually this looks almost like it except w/o the side stripe. Nice wide tires ... and boy those 8 cyclinders made it a gas hog -- even then!

Really I didn't. The windows are really dark and the angle of the sun made them look even darker.

We're not allowed to have window-tint on the side windows here. The cops want to be able to see you was they walk up...

There's a limit that we're not supposed to go darker than here. Mine are probably darker than the limit but I've never heard of anyone getting a ticket for their windows.

I used to get them all the time with my windows. I'd try to be sneaky and roll them both down all the way after they pull me over. But they know the game and ask me to roll it up to inspect. I get the fix-it ticket, go home to peel/scrape off the tint and get it signed off at the nearest CHP station. The ticket ends up costing only a $10 processing fee (or pay $150 without compliance). Then I put the tint back on after I send in the ticket & payment. It's quite a hassle, I need to get that new glass that can change tint-density based upon current flowing through it...

Its hard to believe how militant they are with cars in Kali. Window tinting laws aren't the worst part, its those damn smog tests. A decade ago michigan and a couple other states did the same crap, but these days Kali stands alone in doing smog tests.

My high school car was a 1970 GTO Judge. Jacked up with Cragar S/S wheels. Perfect car for the testosterone driven teen. Yep, I wrecked it.

They even have portable smog-machines that are like a radar-gun. I think it uses lasers or something and beams across the road to a detector on the other side. After you drive by, it can analyze your emissions. Over in the inland valley near Hwy-5 they use random smog checks by the side of the road with the traditional Horiba exhaust analyzers. They pull people over at random and sniff their tailpipes. Although it looks like they primarily target the ricer crowd. Tampering with your exhaust system is a $1350 fine!

I actually think the whole smog thing is a big racket anyway to put money into the State's and inspection-station's pockets. You can't even change to a non-stock air-cleaner or muffler without requiring a C.A.R.B. exemption. Changing out a catalytic requires extensive documentation with the shop explaining what went wrong with the old one and where they got the new one. They also have to prove that they installed it correctly. What a load of B.S.!!! If they're really concerned about emissions, the ONLY test they need to have is a sniffer test. As long as the gases coming out of your tailpipe is below minimum, then you should be allowed ANY kind of upgrades to your car you want. But NOooo, that's way too simple... they gotta come up with a tonne of arcane procedures to keep the bureaucracy busy to justify its budget... grrr...

I had a Corvette cat installed on my Landcruiser. That was in conjunction with a custom ceramic header and high flow muffler. But I got away with it because I knew the smog guy. His theory was that if he could get it to pass the test, he would overlook mods. That was pretty fair.

Oh, according to the CVC, even clear tape is illegal forward of the driver's shoulders.

In michigan its a 2,500 dollar fine, not that they check. Just incase though, I've been contemplating hollowing out my cats so it looks like there still there. Theres no smog checks though, so it probably won't matter anyway.

I got a ticket soon after I installed the tint. I did it myself and it took HOURS. There was no way I was going to remove that stuff.

So I called up my friend who had the same car as I did (they were both red) switched the plates and told the inspector it took a long time to get that goo off. Was able to write it off!

Of course now I'm more mature and would never think about doing anything like that.

I've only had two cars so far, and they both qualify as pragmatic/reliable compared to cool. My favorite cars would have to be the Mercedes Fintails

which I will get, with a TDI or electric conversion. And the custom Hotaru

which I will never get. By may build a variation myself.
In terms of motorcyles, the Thunderstar is pretty novel in what's otherwise a dull industry.

And as for microcars, definitely a Messerschmitt kr200

and a toss up between the VW 1L

and the Daihatsu UFE-III.

The only sports car I'm partial to is the Ariel Atom

and I'm also very partial to the various velos with electric assist, but would have to build what I want myself as nothing out there fits my taste. In terms of CA's smog regs, they're plenty easy to get around if you're willing to put the time into research.

It's very close to where I live. It's only open on Tuesdays, and if you are lucky you can take a ride when they put miles on the cars to keep them up.

There's also a musuem on New Zealand's North Island, of all places. They have quite a few. I may have photos around somewhere.
