It looks like the urban areas are photos and the rural areas are landsat. You can really tell inthe resolution. Get outside of the city and the photos are really pixilated.

When I checked Sacramento there are buildings pointing different ways, this is the sign of a mosiaced (sp?) aerial photo. I checked SF and the buildings all point in the same direction that one is a sat image, probably spot or something with high res.

I made a global assumption when looking at Sacramento, it looks like there are multiple sources for thier data. A nice assemblage for a free service.

hey.... at least with this, you can plan your ride and not hit any >12% grades

(which makes it super relevant for the single/fixed forum, i say)

The terrorists will be bummed. You can't zoom into military bases or some gov't facilities.

Haha, people get pictures of their house from space, and immediately they're complaining about them being 2 years old. The pictures of my house are 13 years old.

I figured this would be coming eventually when Google bought Keyhole, then release their maps beta pretty soon afterwards. Way cool. If only they had the high res. USGS photos like terraserver has.

O contraire. I'm looking down on a nice picture of McChord AFB right now. I haven't tried Area 51, though.

Appears I was wrong about the USGS photos. I compared the planes parked on the tarmac, and they're exactly the same between Terraserver and Google Maps, but terraserver will let you zoom in further. I'm not sure, but I would say about 1 foot vs 1 meter resolution.

HA you're right! I did check McChord out before and noticed it wasn't restricted. Figured no one would miss the TacomaAroma anyway. Another oddity is that you can't zoom into Mt. Rainier. Dunno what the Feds are hiding up in the crater. Time for Agent Mulder to grab an ice axe and find out!
