    Annoying NPR Announcer

Anyone else annoyed by the "underwriting" announcer on NPR during Morning Edition and later All Things Considered ?

I've heard on 3 different NPR stations here, so I thought she might be national, but maybe just regional.

I just get so fed up with NPR using the term "underwriting" when they mean "sponsoring".

I have never seen/heard that word mis-used like that anywhere else.

What's her name? Honestly, I don't find any of the NPR voices annoying.

Can't say that I've found the voice to be notable. And she probably isn't responsible for the choice of terminology in what she's reading.

She might be local. In the SF Bay area we have Julie Debish on traffic. I dont think she has any sinus passages at all. It sounds like her head is made from a solid chunk of wood. My other favorite NPR pet peeve is that every announcer takes a massive gulp of breath when they begin talking. They should take that massive breath a split second BEFORE the mic comes on not after.

I also quit sending money to NPR when the sponsorships starting getting out of hand and the story content started to favor the sponsors. The public radio model is outdated and un-necessary given anyone can start an online program these days. You don't need public radio to ensure access. They should move to the internet and do subscriptions

I haven't been listening to those shows in a while, due to being in a bad reception area and mainly just d/l podcasts... I'll have to make a point to livestream tomorrow and see how bad her voice is.

You can live stream radio stations to your smartphone. I do it fairly often.

I find Ira Glass to be annoying, Tavis Smiley was worse.

They pale in comparison to any number of Faux News 'presenters' and 'spokes dirt bags' for sheer irritation...

Have you seen this skit from SNL on Ira Glass? Pretty funny. https://screen.yahoo.com/dress-rehea...005203006.html

NPR is something I tune in and out of, so I forget anything annoying. Commercial radio? That's beyond annoying, that is gross (yeah, not Terri Gross).

I don't know the one you're talking about, but I personally can't stand listening to Diane Rehm. She sounds like a withered old creature who might croak on air at any moment. Her voice just grates on my ears.

Both Morning Edition and All Things Considered have the same problem that commercial radio news does - overdramatic, sensationalistic presentation of the news. I find it particualrly offensive when they present news from a certain perspective; 'family' oriented, elder oriented, etc. Just present the news and its details and let the listener decide for himself/herself. Also get tired of the different morning talk shows, as they all address the same topics, the same flavors-of-the-day.

My favorite radio station these days? KOFF, or its east coast equivalnet WOFF.
    Are we having fun yet?

I have to admit I felt somewhat that way, but then felt a bit guilty when I learned it was the result of a medical problem.

But I love Ofeibea Quist-Arcton's voice.

+1 I'd rather listen to nails on a chalkboard. I close my eyes and imagine the crypt-keeper on the other end.

That realization didn't phase me... I mean, come on, she's a radio host without a radio voice. She should talk less and work more with a team. It's deafening, really.

True, but I still live in the '90s. Actually, I have an Iphone5 but not enough data to stream when I'm away from wifi. I'll sometimes stream BBC and Marketplace. For keeping up on current news, I just listen to the KCRW To the Point podcast. I tend to only listen to All Things Considered if I'm in the car and pick up an NPR station while commuting, don't really want to stream All Things but now I want to hear this voice. LOL. I should get back into the habit of listening to Morning Ed... hmmmm. I feel so lost these days when Wait, Wait comes on.

I figured that it might be medically related, but that doesn't change the fact that I'd rather not listen to her. To be honest, I'm not a big fan of Ofeibea's voice either (she always sounds so overly melodramatic to me).

Meh... the only think I find annoying about NPR is Marketplace. I'm not sure why. Mary McPartland Jazz is on right now... great show. She sounds like a sweet old lady.

To me, NPR is about the only thing left that is worth listening to these days, being broadcast over the airwaves. Tune up and down the FM dial and see what else you get - not much that us grown-ups want to listen to. And AM radio has been co-opted by right-wing talk shows (and sports). In my house and in my cars, the only reason to turn on the radio is for NPR or if there's a game on. I know there are still some good local radio stations broadcasting quality programs, but overall broadcast radio has sunk pretty low and NPR is a breath of fresh air in an otherwise desolate wasteland of radio programming.

Diane Rehm takes some getting used to, but really not that much. I don't mind listening to her now although it was strange at first. She sometimes has interesting guests. I don't find anyone else's voice annoying.

There are a few independant non-npr stations on the left side of the dial, but not many.

My two favorite personalities are Shankar Vedantam and Robert Krulwich.
Both do science stories, and both have excellent speaking voices.

I listened to Diane Rehm before she was affected by her illness, she had such a beautiful voice, and a great interviewer. I give her a ton of credit for continuing her show given her disability, still able to get great guests to join her to talk about important things. They don't run her show on Oregon Public Radio, I still listen in on the internet, but not regularly.

I get a kick out of her name. Should be the name of a sci-fi action hero. And the way she rolls her r's, especially when she notes that she is reporting from Dakarrrrrrr.

I don't really care why she sounds like that, she doesn't have a voice for radio at this point. She could just as easily continue to produce and write for the show; after all, it should be about the content, not the personality, but she's the darling of some sponsors so on air she stays.
