The system at school is designed to be at your disadvantage

Damnit! I dont understand at all. I had a 90 in my english class before the last grade of the term (the final paper). Alright so i get the paper back and I have a 90, so i figure woohoo i must have a 90 in this class then. right? WRONG!. Now i have an 88! How does getting an A on a paper bring my grade down? HE siad something and all i can think of is, this is like a casino, ment to make you fail.

That isnt right, if you really care about teh gradge (hey its a difference) go to your teacher and tell him to explain to you why the grade went down. You sure there were no extra grade i.e. participation or stuff like that?

It shouldn't have made your grade go down. Talk to the teacher or the councelor(sp), because something's wrong.

I dont know, he asked told me it all and i couldnt follow. Im telling you the systems more complicated than an insurance plan! It doesnt sound right to me. He gives us two projects per term. Each counting as 10% of the term grade. I got a 90 on the final paper and a 110 on another project. All seemed pretty well except mice and men. Its odd, he says he designed this unit to help the failing students from JUlius caesar, since that is supposed to be the hardest unit. Well I get a 110 on the Caesar project, and a 96 on the final. And mice and men brought me down . I still dont get it, im gonna go bother him tommorow

Maybe he does it like my math teacher.

At the beginning of the term you hvae 100% on all projects and homework. As you turn things in or forget to turn things in, he deducts points to match your score.

Ex.

Beginning of term: 100% on math homework.

Assignment #1 turned in: 100% still.

Assignment #2 missed: -2%

Total: 98% in homework section of grade.

2% is just a fictional number, I don't know what each of our homework assignments is actually worth.

My gf's mom is a teacher. She knows absolutely next to nothing, she once made a comment about not knowing who won the civil war when there was a documentary on.
One day, I was over for dinner and looked at her "answer" sheet that was given to her by the school board to grade her 5th graders exams. Out of 30, I found 2 mistakes in there.

Remember, no child left behind = no child left behind by holding everyone else back. It's like a manufacturing line, you take the bottleneck and let that be your pace maker.

well i mean I like this guy. Hes been teaching for 12 years, got his masters. The teachers at my school overall are great i think. Except this one, the new latin teacher. I got this impression when i saw "Latin for dumbies" on her desk.
Luckily though, my studiousness in history coutns as one extra point on my GPA so it will counteract english

I guess that explains why he's teaching English and not maths.

I would see it as each assignment is weighted differently. If you have a 90% and then you turn in a paper and you get a 90% but it's weighted less than another assignment, then it's possible it could bring your grade down 2 points. I'm not a math whiz but that seems to be the deal.

SOme teachers use the point scale, where each test/quiz/paper is worth X points, then the percentile of accumulated points/total points is your grade.

I had problems with that scale for a while: it works like this:

paper 1, 20pts

tests, 10pts
quizzes 5 pts
paper 2, 20pts
endterm paper 60pts

say there are 10 weeks in a class, one test every two weeks. That would make for a max points in each category the following

papers 1 and two, 40pts
quizzes, 50pts
tests, 50 pts
endterm 60pts
total 200pts.

Now, if you averaged 90 on everything it would be the following:

papers: 36pts
quizzes: 45pts
tests: 45pts
endterm: 54
total: 180/200 = 90%

so it's all peachy, right?

...wrong, if they added an extra 20 points for "attentdance/participation"...whis is where people sometimes lose out....to me attendance/participation is BS, but sadly some schools allow it. If you got an 80% score there, that could drop you to 88% or just a bit lower (I'm sick of the math ).

If one project is weighted more than another your overall grade can be reduced (100% on a paper worth 70% of the overall grade would yeild a "c" average if you did no other work).

Grading on a curve (not necessarily it but just pointing out one of the many reasons I hated highschool)...ahhh...I hated school, totally useless to me in almost everyway.

Here is my best memory, I was a computer geek, programming by 12 and building pcs by the age of 10 (back then pcs were signifigantly more difficult than the plug and play of today). I applied for computer class in grade 11 and got denied. I needed to go into typing. Ok...typing it is. Well I have a small handicap on my left hand that does limit my ability to type using the home keys. I can type 80wpm but can't keep my fingers in their place. I am literally over one entire set to the left. Well, I couldn't pass the class. The requirement was for me to touch type using the home keys. Couldn't pass the class and couldn't get into computer class. Meanwhile the computer teacher was a migrated english teacher and I could geek circles around him. 2 years later I did get in by pissing and moaning to all the the appropriate people and got 105% (yep I am in canada)...

Ahhh highschool, memories of disgruntled teachers, teacher strikes, and teachers who were always teaching classes they didn't belong in (art teacher teaching grade 11 Advanced math .....)....I don't miss a thing and I sure don't miss the teachers.

I had that happen once. I was a sophomore in high school at the time, taking Geometry. At the end of the semester, the teacher was going to drop our lowest quiz, test, and homework score. I had over 95% on all the tests, but I had missed a quiz and a homework. And, after doing the math, I realized that - somehow - my grade would drop from a A- to a B+ if he dropped the test. Luckily, my teacher was cool, so he did my grade separately from everyone elses in the computer, giving me a good grade in the class.
