There is no nicer way to say it: Comcast sucks

These people stink! Sheesh, we pay 42 something a month for this high speed internet that works when it wants. FOr over a week only some sites work, in fact right now the only site i have found working is this one so thats always good. ANd AIM works also. But email, google or anything else will not work. I email them and they say "its a situation that has no expected date when it will be solved but our engineers are working". But what stinks is that i dont think theres any other cable internet providers in the area

I pay for my parents to have comcast. It's a hit or miss. I have DSL, which sometimes sucks because it cuts in and out when I get phone interference. It can be a nightmare sometimes. One time, I didn't get the internet for a few days, and they kept coming up with one lame excuse after another. Luckily, I only pay $19.95, so it wasn't all bad.

Our comcast internet bill is about $55 a month. That's a rip off.

Comcast has been experiencing problems with their DNS servers over the last week or so, I think. Just google for good, stable DNS servers in your area & use try them instead.
In my area, mid-Atlantic, 4.2.2.1 & 4.2.2.2 work pretty well.

I love Comcast as my cable TV provider. I've never had an outage, and we only pay $13.48/month. Whenever I've had a billing issue, it's resolved quickly and to my satisifaction. When they installed the service when we moved to this loft, they were on time and did the work quickly. My ISP works via T1 line, and I pay $50/month for it. Yes, I know I could get DSL for ~$30/month, but then I'd also have to get a phone line. The cheapest phone line we could get would run >$20/month. Adding the DSL service chare to the phone line service charge, the total bill is greater than the shared T1 line charge. Cable modem is currently not an option.

You have a remote at your gym?

SBC sucks. They billed me 6 months after I bagged them and kept telling me I owed money. I had to keep explaining to customer service that I didn't owe jack and that they better stop sending me bills. I hate SBC.

I always demand credit when things are down. Why should I pay when they can't produce? If I couldn't produce money, they wouldn't continue my service, would they?

Comcast does suck, but they seem to be getting better.

My highspeed cable internet used to be like that, it would go out randomly. I called, had a guy come out, he swapped the modem and it's been peachy ever since.

My mom has the Dish Network deal and that sucks. It's awful. the channel packages suck. It only works when it wants, which isn't when it rains or the wind blows or it's kind of chilly out or a bit too overcast.

I'd definitely take cable over the dish any day, even Comcast. It does suck though that one cable company can dominate the area.

In DC I believe Comcast is it for cable. There used to be Jones Cable, Montgomery Cable, and Cox Cable spread over different parts of the area. Then I believe Jones bought Montgomery and expanded well into Cox's territory, then Comcast ate up Jones and spread everywhere. I think Cox still exists, but in a very small/reduced form. This has all happened between the time when I was ten and now, so I wasn't always very aware of it. Any other DCers care to correct me?

Unless things have changed recently, cable companies contract with municipalities to provide service to the community. If you have cable via Comcast, that's your only choice. If it's Cox, it's Cox. The only way to get a different cable provider is to move to a different area, or wait until their contract is up and lobby the city to get a new provider.

When I first got cable TV in Richardson, TX, it was Telecable of Richardson, which then got bought out by TCI, who were then bought by AT&T. I'm not sure if Comcast bought out AT&T's cable operation, or if AT&T lost the contract, in any event, it's now Comcast.

Oh, and if I was able to get cable modem service at home, I'd switch from my shared T1 line in a heartbeat.

Just change your DNS servers & you'll be fine.

I always keep a list of alternate DNS servers handy. When Comcast started having problems last Thursday, I plugged in a couple off the list & was up & running in no time.

If you find you're having problems like this again in the future, just try to ping the DNS servers you're currently configured to use. If you get no or sluggish response, then you know what the problem is. Piece of cake.

That's what I did. Worked like a charm. Not that it wasn't working-it would just cut out every hour or two and I'd have to reset the modem. Me love cable tv/internet. Me better love it-my bill would probably cause some people to have a coronary.

I got my cable modem back when our provider was Intermedia-about 7 years ago. They were okay, but things actually improved once Comcast bought them up. Tried DSL for awhile, but it wasn't as fast for me. Now, I live within reach of the cable company, but not the phone company(for DSL) so I just dropped Bellsouth and kept the cell phones. So far, so good....

Only competition for Comcast I know of around here is Charter Cable. Never tried 'em, tho.

I've only been in the area for about 5 years. I don't know for sure, but I think that there is also a Starpower Cable company available in DC. Maybe only some parts of DC. I eventually called and bought service from Comcast. When I was deciding on cable, I looked at the Starpower website and washingtonpost.com had listings for their channel lineup. There is a link and a number for both Comcast and Starpower from the dc.gov cable regulatory page. The building that I used to live in apparently wasn't wired for regular cable. They offered like 20 channels or so through Washington Cable company using some roof satellite or antenna. They serve a few other older apartment/condo buildings in the SW area of DC. Satellite (e.g. Dish Network) service was available only to people who lived on the south side of the building. The building is oriented such that half the apartments face the north and half face the south. Guess which side of the building I lived on. I had nice view of the Capitol Dome, however.

I've had Verizon DSL for more than 2 years and I have had maybe two outages lasting a few hours over that time. I've had Comcast digital cable for about 8 months. I have no complaints for the tv service. And I've really enjoyed watching, among many other things, "Cyclism Sundays", but I may be canceling the cable, especially if I move again. I never had cable while growing up and that's a significant wad of money going into the television which I should be watching less of anyway. I can only get OLN if I buy the digital cable. It's not part of the cheaper basic non-digital package.

The odd thing is that here in Philly, there are three different branches of Comcast for cable service in the city. My friend who lives 20 blocks from gets Speed TV and Fox Sports World included in his package. I have to pay like $20 a month extra if I want to get it. He also pays $5 a month less for his service.

Plus they are about to erect the fifth largest building in the country here for their headquarters. Get ready for more service fee hikes.
